Good point...But I'll never tell jorge PS: Delivery is supposed to be sometime in December-January. Ideally I'll take delivery of it at the Dallas Convention so a lot of you can see the rifle in person. If it's anywhere near as nice as the 404 they had on display last yeaer, I'll be very happy. j USN (ret) DRSS Verney-Carron 450NE Cogswell & Harrison 375 Fl NE Sabatti Big Five 375 FL Magnum NE DSC Life Member NRA Life Member

I am sure you would like the SLEEK 458 Lott in a Granite action,Krieger barreled wood stocked rifle with expertly done express sights, peep sight, barrel band etc...I was on the phone today with an associate of one of the worlds best master gunsmiths-riflemakers and he told me the GMA would do a good job of feeding the 458 Lott.He said the GMA action was really good with long and slender cartridges like the 375 H&H.

shitaway: if you must embarrass yourself with moronic statements like the one above, please do so on somebody else's thread, or better yet, create your own. Here's an idea for a title: "When morons design rifles." jorge "465, you make perfect sense, but I have to admit that I'm a gun nut (as most of us here are as well ) and since I already have a 416 Rigby, I just HAD to have a 45 bore." It makes perfect sense that what we gun nuts do makes no sense. 465H&H 465H&H

The 416 is the practical choice. Will you be happy with it being a gun nut? If the 450 recoil gets to be too much and you down load a bit for comfort in your "grey years", what level of performance woud you be happy with then? To keep you and the rifle shooting would you be happy loaded down to 458WM speed and performance? That is what I would ask myself.

The 450 beats the 416 hands down IMO because you can always download the 450 if you wish, and a .458 slug makes a bigger hole. In fact, if Mr. Rigby had been thinking more clearly at the time, he would have designed the 470 Mbogo, but it took many years and a Canuck with an interest in African hunting to come up with that.

Jorge, I know where you are coming from with the 460 needing to be in a Wby. I would get the 450 Rigby in the class of rifle you are making. Like you, the 450 Dakota leaves me a little cold and it should be in the Dakota rifle. For the 450 Rigby at worse you could buy a couple of boxes of Kynoch ammo and easily make cases from 416 Rigby. You would probably need to neck them to 475 and then run them through a 450 Rigby die. I think Norma is making factory ammo for the 450 Rigby so there is another source of brass. As to recoil I can tell you the 460 is very easy to work with with reduced loads with bullets from 350 to 500 grains. 85 grains of 4064 does right on 2000 f/s with 500 grain Hornady and no fillers. That load is about 20 grains less than maximum with 4064 in the 460. And you will have all those 45/70 type bullets to play with. Since you have a Ruger 416 Rigby it only seems natural that the classier rifle you are getting should be in the 450 Rigby. Mike

I like the 416 Rem mag better than the Rigby because it has less recoil, can fit in more guns and I have 5 416 rem mags and 8,000 pcs of brass and 5,000 bullets.I have been shooting the 416 rem mag for 10 years now.I love shooting the 416 rem mag.I do it from a standing bench off of a milk crate off top of the bench with a 60 pound bull bag on top.I also use two past pads.I can shoot 150 rounds of 416 rem mag in a day.I usually stop at 120 to 125.I think they are one of the funnest guns to shoot.I use 350 gr speer mag tips at 2400 to do my practice shooting.I usually shoot at least 20 400 gr or 410 gr woodleighs at 2400fps.I sold both of my 458 win mags because brass got so hard to find.I dont have to worry about my 416s for a while.I do wish Remington would make some more nickle plated brass.I have shot lots of clover leaf groups from my guns.I do alot of 200 yard shooting and alot of speed shooting.I really like to use to my guns before I hunt.I have shot about 2600-3000 rounds of 416 so far.I have not had as much time to shoot building my house. The 416 rem mag is better because of cheaper brass, less recoil,Less powder and its in more guns.I think the 416 ruger will be aesome.I am planning on building one.You cant go wrong with any of the 416s they are all good.

I wouldn't put as much emphisis on caliber as I would bullet construction. Any caliber from a 9.3x62 to a 700 N.E. is good enough Lion medicine with a properly constructed bullet. Wow, I can't believe this thread is still going! I've pretty much made up my mind and I'm going to stick with my original plan of the 450 Dakota I think. If I don't like it, I can always rebarrel, plus I have a lot alrady invested in brass & dies. Speaking of barrels, I also decided on 23" instead of 24". Thoughts? jorge USN (ret) DRSS Verney-Carron 450NE Cogswell & Harrison 375 Fl NE Sabatti Big Five 375 FL Magnum NE DSC Life Member NRA Life Member

I think you are making a wise decision. Good luck! The only easy day is yesterday!

jorge 23" will be fine. Remember that the earlier 460 Wbys with the Pendleton Dekickers were 26" but the actual barrel was about 23". They did 2500 f/s with ease with 500 grainers. Mike
