I turned the channel. Making it seem like it was a wild hunt was deceptive at best.

I have to say I was sorting of rooting for the lion myself. Unfortunately the poor thing looked more like an overgrown house cat that was simply looking for a nice place to lay down and take a nap.

I really believe I would have much less problem with this if they would not try to over dramatize the hunt, e.g., we have pushed him and pushed him and you never know when he is going to come for you, what an adventure, etc. Pity is that some folks are going to come away from watching the show thinking that is what lion hunting is really like.

We don't get the show here but would love to know who the outfitter is? Do they mention it, I have heard of a few Outfitters hunting Lion in the NW province swear by the fact that the lions are true free range cats, they even advertise on there Web page as Free Range, any idea who they are?

Group called Hunting Legends. Here is a link that shows some pictures. As you can see, this ain't no free range cat.

Look, I don't blame the outfitter it is not his show. I do blame the hosts for making out that the hunt is something it is not.

Guys,

There seems to be a bloom of these South African lion hunts on outdoor TV of late. In my opinion these hunts are fine for folks that understand exactly what they are buying. I do think as others have suggested that the TV shows depicting these hunts may give the less experienced folks watching these shows the idea that REAL lion hunting is no different from these ranch hunts in RSA. Nothing could be further from the truth. I honestly don't know if some of these outdoor celebrities really realize the difference. Some of these folks seem to be pretty clueless about Africa.

Hunting Legends???? Bullshit!!

That was disgusting!!! A day hunt for a lion!!! What a joke!!! I just love the way they try to create the illusion of a real hunt. "We tracked the lion for hours and hours",…but they don't mention it is in a high fence pen.

Mark is also right. There has been a lot of South African lion "hunts" on the various outdoor channels lately.

Ya, well said Mark. I know lots of these guys/gals who have been doing these lions "hunts" over the past couple yrs. I know Jim Burnworth quite well as a matter of fact. Most of em are not experienced African hunters, and most of em have only been to SA for example. All of which is fine, but if they would just tell it like it is - I doubt many here would have much of an issue with it. I know, as do you - and lots of others here on AR, exactly how long/difficult/strenuous a REAL lion hunt can be. Unfortunately, the viewing public is getting a whole different idea from these canned lion hunts.

That's a good question Mark. Do the celebrities such as Burnworth, Bunny, Nalos, etc, actually KNOW the difference themselves?

I have a friend that I went to college with, in the same fraternity. Haven't seen him for ages. All of a sudden, he pops up on a hunting TV show, specializing in bowhunting. On later episodes, they began incorporating some rifle hunts. We reconnected and at one point I inquired about using some of my African footage as most of their stuff centered around whitetails and pigs, with a few elk hunts. His response was that didn't need any additional African footage as they had just returned from safari and all three hosts had just taken "incredible black maned lions" with their bows! I KNOW for a fact, those boys don't know the difference between what's real and what isn't.

Todd,

That's exactly my point. Not a clue! The impression I get is that some outdoor celebrities feel they have hunted Africa because they have shot a lot of PG plus collected a lion on ranches in RSA. I'm just afraid their fans will pick up that attitude thus cheating themselves of some of life's greatest adventures outside of the ranches.

I always looked at some of these as hunting cartoons.
I have to agree that these guys have to believe that their own hunts like these are real.
At the same time, they know it is BS and to them, it's just business and selling products.
I always believe people are smarter then they appear and these shows just show that.
Had couple of aquintances that went to RSA on lion and lioness hunts and appeared to believe that they hunted hard for one day and only escaped death by their incredible shooting skills.
Point is, MONEY TALKS, BULLSHIT WALKS.

Makes me wonder how phony their other hunting is behind the scenes so they can thump their chest in trying to promote themselves or to sell a product whether it is equipment or a hunt.

I think that they KNOW EXACTLY!!!! what they are doing by killing an easy 100% Kill Lion in a day or so instead of a real/wild $80,000 Lion Hunt that will be 50/50 with a rifle, never mind with a Bow.

Two of big five ( lion & rhino ) I will never hunt. Bit pricey for me and wouldn't ever do canned hunts. They don't smell right.
Too bad, because it would be hoot to do it in wild. Plus one lion =two elephant hunts.
At least I can live thru them on real shows and thru you guys here on AR.
Good enough for me so everyone that hunts wild lions, please , do reports.
Love it.

Andy spends 50% of his air time pimping one or the other of his business ventures: Krossroads guitars or Velvet Antler Wine or Ross Bows or his CD's. He's a wannabe rock star wearing "wife beater" shirts.

Yet, if anyone makes snide or tongue-in-cheek remarks towards the author of such an 'achievement', the entire peanut gallery will shit all over him for having desecrated his hunt report!

Hunting Legends,

I know them well; absolute waste of time in my eyes as outfitters and I have said that to them in their faces, nothing about them is wild Africa like they try to sell on their web site,

There are a few reserves/ranches that do offer an ethical, fair opportunity for high fence lion, but these characters will buy a lion today, transport it tomorrow and shoot it the next day.

I have no time for them.

The audience does not know, based on the huge number of folks who ask us at shows " why don't you guys shoot more black maned lions, you know the monsters we see on other shows?" Well, we have a easy answer, WE SHOOT AND HUNT WILD LIONS...ONLY!!!
Believe me, this guy will submit this for a Dangerous Game Award clip at the trade award shows, and beat us, as happened several times with penned raised lions. Last year the cute blond from DRIVEN tv won an award for her live threatening confrontation with a semi sleeping SA lion as she and a team of about eight cameramen, photographers, and PH's bailed off the truck and walked about 30 yards towards the mildly interested, but huge maned lion. She shot it with her bow then stood on stage and regaled the crowd of her near death experience. Oh brother. Want to film or shoot in a high fence for lion? I have NO PROBLEM with that, if you are honest about it and say so up front. NONE DO though, as far as I have seen. Really hate that so many of todays producers try to sell that crap as a real lion hunt. It gets old from where we sit, I promise you that!
