Zambia's wildlife sector is going from strength to strength, and early, successful experiments like yours have paved the way for wider discussions on how to unlock the potential that this country's wildlife economy has. The only way forward is by working through meaningful, equitable partnerships with the local communities as owners of the majority of the country's land and habitats. Fortunately Zambia's institutions are getting stronger, more participatory, its policies more inclusive...and all this is a good defence against land-grabbing and other vices that would ultimately harm the long-term future of wildlife as a resource here.

What about the no awards to the Prime GMA's going on 2 years? That is weak on the Zambian Governments part. How many Prime GMA's now have no protection??

Andrew,

Hope you are hanging in there. I know you're busy, but when you get a chance, tell me what you've got for 2025 in August preferably. I've blocked a trial setting then. I'm gong to Tanzania this year and work schedule only allows a hunt every other year. Cats are always top of the list, as well as buffalo and looking at going to Zambia for the first time, I'd like some of the unique species -- Lechwe, red or black, tsessebe, and/or sitatunga if you have any of that available. I realize that's a long and varied wish list and might not be available all at once. But welcome thoughts and would like to make a plan.

It's a complicated situation that's still in court, and almost nothing is filtering through to the public, so hard to give any update.

What is clear is that the previous government's state capture project modeled on that of Zuma in South Africa was well advanced and is taking an age to dismantle, prosecute and move forward from. Given that the modus operandi of state capture is usually through tender fraud, its not inconceivable that that at least some of the hunting concessions are implicated. Unfortunately another legacy of state capture is the erosion (in this case essentially elimination) of an investigative press, and hearsay is not reliable so will just have to wait for processes to run their course.

On the upside, all of the prime areas are prime because they lie adjacent to well-protected parks, and in most of these GMAs there are also well-funded and effective conservation organisations working in the GMAs too. The secondary and understocked areas are a lot more dependent on the efforts of the safari operators, and these have fortunately not been as affected. Overall the picture for wildlife and hunting in Zambia is pretty positive.

As Lechwe pointed out the prime Luangwa concessions are well-patrolled and most are utilized by photographic operators.

Having been at your beautiful camp, Andrew, it breaks my heart to see that damage and destruction.

I hope you get justice.

Where do I start. Joyce and I have a special personal tie to that camp. Essentially our money built it and we had the honor of being first in.

The concept of a partnership with the local community was brilliant. Having seen videos of the camp at a date much later than our 2012 experience I was flabbergasted at how much the game density improved.

Obviously the concept of this plan was properly thought out.

Unfortunately it seems someone wanted it more.

And we came soon after you J&J, at your recommendation, and a good one it was! Our 6th safari with Andrew will be this summer, and I believe (3) of them were at Royal Kafue. It is so sad looking at that last pic of Royal. Some pretty good memories were gathered there, thanks to Andrew!

Frostbit, your hunt report was the first I read on this site after Andrew encouraged me to join. Memorable!

If DSC Frontline can help, I will ask. I’m not involved the foundation, but I know many have seen your efforts.

I’ve said I’ll go to Zambia and hunt with you. I don’t mean that as an empty promise. I have two of your “Lion” prints.

Without typing it out FTMFers.

I meant to be DSC Member...bad typing skills.
