Again? They had the same issue last year with snow in Jo'burg. Interesting to hear of it two years in a row.

I've just spent the last month in Botswana and the early mornings were well below freezing. Confused .....and it's not much warmer here in White River.

I'll be damn glad to get to the heat of the Selous. Smiler

Just got off the phone with one of my PH's in the Eastern Cape and he said it was snowing now. He is in the Stormberg Mountains.

I started in the NW Province in late May...cold at night, early mornings. As mentioned, when the Sun came up it would get warm to hot unless the wind was blowing. On the Eastern Cape it was windy and blowing most of the time with cloud cover and some rain. Half the time you could see your breath in the early morning. Yes, best bring some warm layered clothing.

PS: Shakari, White River was a beautiful place. I enjoyed seeing it. Damn, I meant to get some oranges!

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Question for you African members.

How do the critter do when the cold weather hits?

Are some susceptible to winter kill?

We are based about 10km from Johannesburg International airport. Johannesburg has not received snow in 26 years.

UEG,

They called it snow in 2006 but most of the flakes melted before they even hit the ground. It was not even visable on the ground. Snow is fairly common in the Eastern Cape, Free State and KZN mountains but it is the first time this amount has fallen in over 26 years in JHB.

I was 4 hours north of Johannesberg at the time of the "big snow-fall of 2006." A few flakes was how it was described to me. Where I was there was frost on the bakkie windshields and that was about it. The PHs wore their long pants and wrapped in blankets on the back of the trucks when moving. I got a Gemsbuck, impala and wildebeeste that day.Piece of cake for a Canadian.

Just across the Tuli block in Botswana where teh Mogalakwena river joins the Limpopo river was there for the last almost 3 weeks nice weather but must say temperatures dropped there as well after the snow fell.

SDhunter

When in the bushveld in limpopo and it suddenly drops in temp. then the animals hide in thicker bush and move less but dont worry the next day they are up and going again as they cannot stand long to still without feeding. Saw it now one day lots of game to be seen after the cold night they are hiding in the thick stuff untill it blows over.

I'll be in the Elisras area on the 5th. I hope it's snowing like crazy! Living in Texas I rarely get to see snow so wouldn't it be a hoot to tell my buddies - and show them the pics - about my hunting trip to S. Africa while it was snowing? Nothing like 'safari' pics with me posing with a huge kudu and snow all over the ground.

bluefin,

The only changes you will have of having a kudu and snow in the same picture is in the eastern Cape no way you will get snow in Ellisras area. Sorry
