Yep,
They should have went to the grocery store and bought the lions some meat were no animals were harmed.

I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

One of my bleeding heart coworkers was very upset about this.

"Poor Marius! Such a young handsome giraffe! How could they do this.....?"

I said that in the interest of lack of human involvement, they should have turned the whole herd loose in the Lion enclosure and let them out when the "proper" balance of nature returned.

I fear the liberals. So much education, so little common sense....

I know what they eat. I shot my lion over giraffe bait.

"Hundreds of you have reached out to me about the death on Sunday of Marius the 18-month old giraffe at the Copenhagen Zoo. I was unaware of it before it happened. As an animal lover, a WWF supporter, and the partner of a man who has dedicated his life to animals (Stephen is a veterinarian and spent his whole life working with animals large and small) I find the situation to be disturbing and the video hard to watch. I have also read numerous articles about the reasoning and justification for his killing and talked to Stephen about it at length. Despite being personally troubled by the action, I also understand the zoo is trying to teach the public about the species, the complexity of life for zoo animals and the life of giraffes in the wild. Stephen and I will visit the Zoo soon to try and understand why they do what they do. I will keep an open mind until I hear all the different perspectives which is my responsibility. Rufus"

Why do they give these animals names?

Ambassador Rufus Gifford

Having worked at a major zoo for almost 25 years, the real answer to the whole thing is explained in the latest article you posted Saeed. It was a zoo animal, and the majority of people view zoo held or bred animals in the exact same manner they view their pets.

I was as bad about it as anyone, but I viewed them as animals and realized hard decisions have to be made sometimes. Most zoos discourage naming their animals because that moves the animal from just being an animal that is on display, to being a unique personality that makes it stand apart from the other animals in the group.

Many times, especially for the more high profile species, elephant/gorilla/lion/tiger/giraffe/hippo/rhinos and a few others, when they would have babies, our PR department would set up a naming contest for the new baby. From experience the vast majority of humans view an animal with a name totally different than one of the same species that does not have a name.

For a while I had a sign that was a picture of Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty, the wording stated: "If it has a name it is a pet, If it doesn't it is dinner"!

One of the first questions people, including other zoo keepers, would ask me once they found out I was a hunter was, "How can you take care of these animals, yet go out and kill other animals"? MY standard answer was, "Because I know the animals I take care of, I do not know the ones I am hunting".

Even the rocks don't last forever.

Actually, it was quite refreshing that a lot of folks were standing there out of personal interest when they did the "autopsy". I think most of them fully understood how the whole natural world operates and they were just getting a front row seat while at the zoo.

P.S. I had NO idea that Rufus was even on our payroll, thank god steve the veterinarian was there to educate and comfort him. Otherwise he probably would have had to fly back to the states for therapy and ultimately recieve a government disability pension.
