Ya know Ray, that's exactly the image that I've always had of YOU.

"I've been here"

"I've hunted there"

"I know such & such big guy"

"If you haven't hunted Africa, you're not a real man" (My personal favorite)

"I've hunted more of Africa than you'll ever dream of"

"I have such & such rifle"

"I rub elbows with 'famous' hunters"

"If you want to know anything, ask me"

"If I start losing a fight, I'll resort to trying to call people whiners"

"If I really start losing a fight, I'll call in the We-Love-Ray fan club for support"

The funny thing is, you will contradict yourself, and then attack people when they point it out.

Yep Ray, it seems that most things you do are aimed at "impressing" somebody.

Me, I ain't impressed.

It was a "rusty" .458 rifle - the kind of rifle the game scouts are usually equiped with and I guess the ammo was probably not the freshest...

Best regards

Erik,

Yes, thanks, I see that now. "Verrosteten" .458 magazine rifle.

It does amaze me that some of the rifles I've seen game scouts carrying will even function at all! But these two managed to get the job done.

What had to be, had to be, and more power to them.

Still, it would be far better if the Tanzanian government would see fit (as some other African nations do) to compensate people for their losses in circumstances like these.

Maybe then at least they wouldn't feel it necessary to risk their lives in defense of their crops.

Cold Bore,
I made my bones, I worked hard to get there, and spent some 40 years doing it, I walked a million miles, near starved to death getting there, I'm 70 and I am no fat cat, and can probably walk you into the dirt, but you can rest easy tonight because I didn't do it to please or displease you....sorry you feel that way.

And still nobody can explain how they managed to find three midget game scouts to pose with the tusks! If the tusks are 4' 6" long the curve, those guys can't be over 4'! Smiler

You might want to check your glasses! I wrote;

"As to the weight of the ivory; 20 inch circumfrence x 4 foot length(+-) from the lip - 5 = 75 pounds. The only way those tusks weigh more than 80lbs is if they had no nerve or the game-scouts pictured were 8 feet tall. No way that is a 100 pounder.

This formula will get you very close to actual tusk weight: Lenght from lip (in feet) X Diameter in inches - 5 = actual weight

Pete,

I think your cetting confused because as Jason says it isd measured from the lip. I assume that means that a large potriton of the tusk was originally in the Ele. The mark where the brown rings start about 2 feet up from the base would be where the lip ended I suppose and the staining would be where the tusk was exposed.

I'm no Heffalump expert but that was what I assumed. The thing is that if the game scouts are NOT vertically challenged, then the tusks could be heavier. It's just not possible (IMO) to look at a photo and guestimate a length like that without some definate perspective.

By the way , When I was at Holts a couple of weeks ago I saw the two tusks that are the 3rd largest recorded hunted tusks from 1936. They Weigh 122lbs and 118lbs. I'll try and post a picture if I can find one in electronic format, but the point is that they were a lot bigger in the flesh

The sale is on my birthday if anyone is feeling generous!!!

Me and my big mouth.

Jason,

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion regardless of what the formula says, based upon a guess of the dimensions of course. They look like hundred pounders to me.

Jason,

I did spot the comment about measuring from the lip, but as Fallow Buck guessed I did not appreciate just what that meant and how much tusk was left in the ele..For some reason I had it in my thick skull tusks were always measured for overall length...because of that, the picture just did not gell...

Regards,

Pete

Pete E and Will

I am retracting my statement about these tusks weighing less than 100lbs. The formula I posted is quite accurate but leaves it up to the PH to make adjustments to the estimate depending on how well the tusks carry the mass out to the tips. After looking at these tusks again and again I realized I had missed an important fact: those tusks carry their mass right out to the tips.

Now, I eat crow.

Jason,

No reason for eating crow. Everyones guess is ALMOST as good as anyone elses. Smiler We may never know for sure.

The bottomline is that I would have dropped that sucker in a heartbeat. It would be nice to have the experience of Blunt so we could give good estimates, but alas we are only rookies.

I hope you are going back soon.

Maybe the photo was modified to make the tusks look bigger! In fact if you look more carefully, you can see where the tips have been extended and made to look thicker. Aaaah yes you can see where the people have been pasted from another photo......must be a fake. Can you start an Enet investigation that might un-earth the culprit? sleep
