Well, my buddy and I shot 9 plains game total. Now, I get the bill for dip, pack and crate......$1800 (2 crates, I'm not sure why it couldn't be in one crate)
I just get an e-mail for the shipping, again 2 small crates...$1400
Does this seem a little excessive for 9 plains game?
I'm not really happy about it, but there is nothing I can do!
Thanks for any input.....wapiti7

Shipping seems reasonable, dip and pack is pretty high IMO. I paid about $100 per animal a couple years ago.

both seem high to me, i just brought back 2 crates that included a life size civit, 110#'s of ivory, a full tanned ele hide, and a couple of other skins for 1200. it might be in 2 crates if one animal is baboon or warthog because it clears customs easier that way.

The dip and pack is high, I just paid $90 just the dipping per animal, total of 30 animals and total fee of about $2700 which includes all crating and administrative fees. On most of our warthogs we are just having the tusks sent back so that was a lot cheaper.

you have been screwed, blued, and tattoed on the dip/pack/crate. i am assuming this is salted hides and skulls, in which case they almost certainly could have gone in 1 crate. shipping seems about right if by air. could have saved a lot shipping by sea.

I believe so. I have been wondering why they send the entire skull and not just the skull cap and horns? Alot less weight. Any thoughts??
Well, it's either pay it or lose the animals.......

I just had 8 plains game animals shipped from Namibia to Calgary via JoBurg and London. Cost of crating and shipping for one crate was $1135US.

Field prep, transfer to Windhoek and dipping was included in my dayrate.

You're not done paying yet. I had pre-paid dip & pack, sea freight, and taxidermy. The customs broker, Wesco Shipping, still wanted ~$2,000 to clear customs!!! So, don't put your checkbook away anytime soon.

I just received 8 trophies for me and my friend in June. Zebra skin and 7 horns/skulls//hides. One crate approx 4ftx4ftx3ft. Dip/Pack Crate was $650 and shipping Jburg to Houston TX was $800.

Looks like they didnt combine your trophies and you are paying for double the work. Ours were combined with no problems at all.

I don't know about the other charges, but, my last shipment from Namibia cost about $2100.00 for shipping to Miami with the shipping from Miami to St. Thomas another $500-$600.00

I'm not sure who you are asking, but if its me, I used International Air Cargo Services of Windhoek. The only other charges I am faced with is a $250 storage charge in Calgary while paper work was being processed. My taxidermist and I are protesting this charge as the paperwork was waylayed in transit and it took several weeks to catch up with my trophies. I am arguing that the storage fees were incurred due to incompetence of others and therefore I should not be liable for them. We'll see how that goes.

The bottom line is I have been in possession of my plainsgame trophies for several weeks, with no further charges pending.

By the way, I am talking about hides, skulls and horns, not finished taxidermy.

It's the biggest scam and unfortunately, most PH's have little or no control. That's why I preset all of my clients shipping business with folks I know and have come to trust. As I've said many times: It is NOT illegal to combine several Hunters trophies in one crate. They just need to have separate shipping documents. Two crates my ass. That equals two crate CHARGES. More of the same scam.

wapiti7: Have you received your paperwork for the show? There is another in August.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
