I will be hunting in Zim again. We are flying direct to Zim from the states. After the hunt, some of us are flying to Capetown to do the tourist thing.

Some of my hunting partners are flying directly home. Is it true we can check our guns all the way through to Zim?

Also, can my hunting partner, who is flying directly home take my guncase and guns with him? This is so I don't have to goof around with the gun thing going in and out of SA.

Thanks for any info,

Regards, PG

The issues would be two in my mind;

1. what about the 4457 forms that will have your name on them and be carried by your friend? I suppose you could go and get additional 4457's in your friend's name with your guns on them. There is no prohibition to this, as the forms are only used to assure that the guns were not purchased abroad.

2. What about any SAA regulations on the number of guns they will allow to be checked per passenger. I don't think this would be a fatal issue to the plan though, as at worst, it would probably just be an excess baggage charge.

PG,

I suspect that it might be easier to entre the country with the guns in your friends name if he intends to leave with them...it keeps everything straight and easy to understand...If you do that you may have to juggle your luggage allowences though...

If the tickets are booked through to Zim, your guns should be checked through as well...

regards,

Pete

There is a limit on how many guns you can bring in and out of the US at one time without an import/export license. I don't know the number, but it isn't a lot.

I think the US limit is at least 5. I know, based on responses from Ganyana to my recent post, that the Zimbabwe limit is 5. I am planning to take 3 with me in two weeks. I hope it works. I'd hate to have to offload a gun somewhere along the trip!

Thanks. T.Carr, I wouldn't have wanted to run afoul of that regulation for sure.

I had my rifles shipped by air from Harare to London last year; cost was about £150 door-to-door. Service was efficient and courteous, and they dealt with UK formalities with ease. Should you want name and umber of company I used, please let me know and I will try to dig it out.
It was much easier than carrying them with me for the rest of my trip.

I don't believe US residents are allowed to ship firearms. It would be difficult to clear them through Customs if the owner is not present.

Terry

Hi Terry,
I did have a pistol shipped from Jo-burg to Los Angeles two years ago. It was just after the rules for bringing in pistols changed. The officer called someone who came to the airport and took my pistol.

He was some sort of import/export person and my glock arrived in LAX customs a few weeks after I got back from ZIM. I sent my runner down to retreive it. It was packed in a nice little crate.

Regards, PG
