When you practice fast follow up shots with your DGR...

Do you grab (Grabber) the bolt handle between thumb and index finger and work the bolt keeping a firm hold on the bolt using the knob for purchase...

or

Do you cup (Cupper) it with the inside of your upper palm below the little and ring finger and then rotate the hand trapping the bolt inside the swell of the thumb on the forward stroke...

or

You also need to be honest and say never thought about it and therefore never really practiced it

Question:

Grabber
Cupper
Never thought about it / never really practice

I not only grab, but I usually wrap the bolt knob with electrical tape so I have a big ball to grab. I pinch it between my forefinger and thumb to keep my finers out of the way.

I never did like the "cupping" thing; if extraction is sticky I don't have as much leverage.

Although I have read and believe that it is quicker to be a "cupper", I grab the bolt between my thumb and middle finger, leaving the trigger finger more or less straight and along for the ride.

Kind of like I "know" a synthetic and stainless rifle is more practacle, I use and prefer blue and walnut.

Even without DG I have a nice 5/8" dia smooth bolt handle on my Mauser which fits in my palm nicely. Checkered bolt handles always mystified me.

I was fortunate enough to have an old BEA hunter teach me many years ago the "proper" way to manipulate a bolt action. Cupping is the only way to have enough control and power for the job. So I ws taught it, I practice it, and I have utilized it. But of course, it is only my opinion as well.

I find the cupped way faster and have more power on the bolt handle. I have tried both, but I have found when trying to grab my fingers slip off. My palm lifts the bolt and throws it back, and my palm by my thumb slaps it back down. I have found I don't short stroke the bolt when doing this either.

Well boys, I just tried it, and I will stick with my method. I can cycle the bolt in less than one second, so grabbing works for me.

Although working the bolt with your cupped hand is the "correct" way of doing so, I certainly have not got arms long enough to do so with a shouldered rifle (which is what I assume the post is about). So I make do as a "grabber" in situations like this.

When working the bolt off the shoulder, I cup...

MHO,

I am not sure I understand how the rifle could even be close to fitting you properly if you could not "cup" from the shoulder.

Actually, when I shoot sitting I open the bolt with my pinky finger, and close it with my forefinger. Kind of wierd, but it works for me. Offhand, I grab.

When confronted with three very supprised Brown Bears at 20 yards near Cold Bay in Alaska, I became a grabber in a big way. This situation occured after the Bear I had shot at 90 yards fell and never moved another muscle. The three other members of my hunt group, the guide another hunter and my brother-in-law did a lot of grabbing as well along with dispatching two more Bears and watching the third retreat with gusto. I had actually practiced cupping but when the nut cutting time came, I reverted back to grabbing anything I could reach. That is the one day of my hunting life I will remember until the day I die, so I have to admit I am a grabber, whether I want to be or not. Then in Tanzania I did it again with the Cape Buffalo, so I just have to live with it. wave Good shooting.

In India schoolboys and girls are taught to shoot with a cup method in the cadet corps. I learned to shoot long before this though the person who taught me was an old timer who also used this system. It seems to have worked very well over the years. Smiler

My guess is that people use whatever method they were taught to use when they first shot a bolt gun, though I would be happy to be corrected in this if I am wrong.

Cheers!

Grabber. I just cycle for another round. Fast follow-up shots are usually bad follow-up shots. I like to have control of the bolt.

Since we're talking about Dangerous Game I have to add, that I've not hunted anything that specifically has tried to hunt me, eat me, or pound me into the earth. I'll know how that feels in a few months. I may be both a grabber and a cupper when the chips are down.

good question, i cup when i remove my head from the stock, but grab when i shoot rifles with a shorter bolt length.

so my mausers are all cup and the a bolts and others are all grab. It seems to be an instcintive switch for me.

i find that cupping makes me use a full stroke on the long bolts.....
