Yes, I'll BANG him! But where do I aim?

Can Ivan Carter or any one of the experienced elephant PH's help?

Assume that an adequate velocity, diameter and weight suitable designed and constructed bullet will result in straight penetration.Where do you aim to hit the brain? Shoot in the middle of one of the the little dark shadow spots behind the ear that is alomst surrounded by green leaves? The topmost "pear shaped" one, or the biggest almost 5-sided one, or the little triangular one? Is the shadow line about the correct front to back line? Which one of the little shadow spots is the correct height?
Methinks thesmall triangular dark spot may do. Or will I get stomped? Big Grin Just asking, as a heart shot as standing needs to go through a lot of animal before getting to the heart. Yes, I know: Wait for him to turn or get yourself in position for a better shot, but what if you have to shoot as he is in the photo?

In good hunting.

I would shoot this bull.

But I would get in front of him depending of the wind and make sure I get a clean kill.

Alf

My first thought exactly, I have a photo somewhere of a bull with same tusk configuration in Kruger, now he might have walked out of Kruger into the Transfrontier Park

But Billy Swanepoel, a friend of mine who is the ranger there flies the park everyday, and if he was too see that bull, it would get a couple of game scouts on his tail as protection the whole day

i would say just based on the photo , by the way his head is , he knows we are there and will do one of two things , spin around and take off , or turn and face ...with a bull of this maginitude , i would say we woulod look at a raking shot into the heart lung area ... in the middl of that dark patch of skin ....

it would be a very very tough brainshot and unless i had secure backup that could followup if it didnt work , i wouldnt attempt that shot ...

i way prefer a brainshot but this is an incredible trophy and looks skittish ...

Think Ele hunters should be able to handle an adreniline rush!

Holler loud, If he runs away - Let him go - He wins.

If he turns and charges, he may still win but you'll get your shot!

Actually, this was how we encountered my bull after tracking for several hours (he did not know we were there and was calm). I walked up behind him to quite close, we were expecting him to wield around and give me that classic frontal head-up look. Instead, he glanced back, eyes got wide, and he took off. Luckily instead of heading straight the direction he was facing, he for some reason went right and I was able to get off a side brain shot before he got up to full speed. It was open and there would have been time for a 2nd shot even w/a bolt action, and the PH would have shot too.

With this guy, as Ivan (who knows infinitely more about this then I) said, the bigger the ivory the less chances one is willing to take. Which ain't necessarily "right", but understandable. The question is, what about that ~60lb Zim bull...near the end of the hunt. I'd like to think I'd do the same thing as before, and go for a clean brain shot.

Bulls don't get big by facing danger! They get the hell out of town ASAP. Heart/lung shoot that sucker while you have the chance.

I would either get a better shot or let him go. Big ivory just isn't important enough to me to chance losing such a wonderful animal to a cripple loss.

Smiler Does this mean you have never had a flubbed brain shot? You can kill them just as dead with a lung shot.

As you well know and I have admitted here, I have muffed my fair share of brain shots. When I said I would wait for a better shot that would include a heart lung shot if available. I have also taken my fair share of eles using the heart/lung shot in the past.
