Either your comment is in poor taste, or you're joking and should try adding a smiley or two. I can't tell which.

I gave up just looking at them!

WinkI think 16 correct answers is pretty darn good. In my case it would be more efficient to just buy the AR patch.

WillSaeed,
This is TOO hard.

I have no idea what most of these are. Some of the standard stuff, looks like one of Roy Vincent's short 458's, WR 425?, etc.
You'll have to find a real gun nut to even get close!

vapodogI consider myself a real gunnut and I can only recognize about a half dozen of them. Saeed has come up with a good one here and I doubt that anyone will get them all.....Especially the one driven over by a gravel truck.

SaeedLadies and Gentlemen,
We though we will give you all a better insentive to try to and guess these cartridges.
The first person who guesses all of the above, will get a $1,000 voucher to spend at Hunter's Headquarters. You can buy anything Harry will sell you.
I know it is hard for hunters to utelize what little usefull matter they have between their ears, but, I am sure you can work the out what these cartridges are if you put your minds to it!
Walter just said "how can they have minds if they have nothing between their ears?!"
Good question!
16 February 2006, 01:46
WillSaeed,
Okay. More incentive!
They are all rifle cartridges...send me the check!

Don_GMy sense of scale is 'way off. Saeed did this a few years back and I didn't get half of them.
I downloaded the file, did a 2D edge detect algorithm, estimated the dimensions off of my "known" cartridges, and got even more confusing results.
I'll just sit back and applaud the winner!

SaeedGentlemen,
Here are a few clues.
There are no 500 caliber of any kind.
No 30-06
No 243 Winchester
No 338 caliber at all
No 220 Swift, which seems everyonw thinks there is.
And apart from the 577 T.Rex which most of you got right anyway, there is no A-Square cartridges.
Have fun!

HonkeyThanks for the hints, it made me see how wrong I was going.

The hard thing is that there are a lot of possibilities for about half of the rounds. The only one that realy makes me say WTF is the second row, 8th one over from the left.

If I had to guess I would say it is some military ordance that fighter jets carry in chain guns??? Well I am having fun trying to figure this out. I just hope the answers don't make me feel the need for any new rifles.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.
What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

SaeedWe had another one with 24 correct entries so far today.
By the looks of things, we can leave this on as long as we wish. It is quite safe from being won!!
The last time we had a cartridge guessing contest no one guessed all of them. But, we had a deadline, and the person guessing the most won.
At that time we had a lot more cartridges, and the prize was a custom rifle.
I think we will let this run until the end of March. And the person guessing the most correct will win.

SaeedMark,
So many people seem to think there is one 500 nitro or another, hence my post.
But, you are right of course, there IS a 500 Whisper, and practically everyone who sent answer has got at least that oen right.
We have had a few members who submitted several revisions, and, usually, their first guess is better than the revisions
