What has happened to them? Is it the anti African hunting climate? I upgraded my Spectrum (then Time Warner) package for Outdoor and Sportsman channels. They bagged Sportsman recently. NBCSN quit African hunting shows a couple years or so ago.

So, has anyone else experienced this? I don’t watch any of the other stuff. Well, “Gun Stories,” “American Rifleman,” “Shockey.” I cant do the deer hunting and other crap. Yes, I will hunt anything, but those shows suck.

Should I be looking elsewhere for quality hunting shows?

I specifically subscribed to the Outdoor Chanel years ago, and got well and truly disappointed.

There was not a single hunting show on there that was anything to do with hunting.

They had stupid "look at me" idiots non stop.

Too much self glorification, too much talking, and what they talked about was bullshit.

I gave up that subscription.

They once had “Tracks Across Africa,” “Dark and Dangerous,” and many others.

I hope Dave Fulson can chime in.

I enjoyed Rann’s show and Tony Makris’s “Under Wild Skies.”

I agree about the rest. I’ll just replay your videos, Saeed.

In my honest and humble opinion I think the YOUTUBE streaming type videos have taken away viewer numbers big time from our traditional TV shows......

There will always be a place for "Tracks" and "Under Wild Sky" type productions on TV, but the internet TV deal has taken flame big time!

It is cheaper and easier for production houses to get their material to viewers. I understand the money comes from the sponsors, and only the "top dogs" make it there. But still an easy and cheap platform to have access to a ton of good shows.

Charl,

I’d love to see one of yours if there’s one out there. You seem to have great hunts.

I don’t think people mind the adverts and sponsorships.

We all know they pay for the shows.

But, pick someone who will provide a hunting show hunters can associate with, not some idiotic individuals whose sole purpose of being on the show is self glorification.

Also, the silly IN YOUR FACE adverts seem to have a totally negative effect on my.

Blanking a name on a scope, or any other part, is just plain silly.

You are spot on with the blanking of scopes, truck brands, etc.

I just want to watch good hunting shows. If the show is good, I can swallow some shameless plugs.

Getting back to the original question, most of these shows are seasonal. They usually start showing up either in July or early fall.

I have been traveling, filming hunting shows, and just saw this thread. Dear DSC, Tracks Across Africa just enjoyed our 13th consecutive year on Outdoor Channel, one of the longest running series on the network. Tracks has, by the way, Dallas Safari Club as it's Title Sponsor, so I am surprised you were unaware. Tracks Across Africa airs the 1st and 2nd quarter of each year.
To make sure we still provide Africa, and safari content year round, Hornady's Dark and Dangerous airs during the 3rd and 4th quarter, but on Sportsman Channel, assuring those viewers interested in Africa and dangerous game in particular have access to our kind of content.
Saeed, have you ever seen one of these shows? I am thinking not based on your comment. I hope you will tune in, as I assure you neither is a "look at me" ego driven production. Our focus is the destination, the game, interesting people involved and the hunting and conservation stories we tell each week.

Dave,

I’m totally aware about Tracks and DSC as title sponsor. I have always thought it is one of the best out there. I have seen it throughout the many iterations with having a “star” (Boddington, then Carter) and now just a great cast of guys. I now understand the seasonality and why I haven’t seen one in a while. I have it set to record on my DVR and get around to it when possible. Dark and Dangerous being in Sportsman explains why I haven’t seen that due to Spectrum dropping that channel.

Saeed:

If you are paid to endorse a product, it is actually against the law to then use another product (FTC). So if I am paid by Leupold to use their scopes, tell the public that I use them and then switch to another brand (for whatever reason), that presents some problems.

I can understand why someone would tape over a scope, especially if it is a paid client using his own gear on a show sponsored by a competing brand.

I have said it a million times, but what I find disgusting is big name guys in the industry advising others on their websites to use "Brand X" but not disclosing they are paid to do it. That is clearly against the law, but many seem to ignore it.

Funny thing is, when a TV show host does say they are sponsored by a particular brand they get criticized for it.

It's a no win situation all round. Roll Eyes

Dave,

I am sure your shows are great, sadly, finding time to watch TV shows that come at specific times is very difficult for me - they might even be shown at times when we are fast asleep here.

I have heard of your shows, and everyone seems to think they are great.

I wish you the best of luck.

I have quit watching all hunting shows. I used to watch them non-stop. The good ones and the bad ones. I recorded everything. I don’t even watch my favorite ones anymore. For whatever I lost all desire to watch them almost over night. Just quit DVRing them and do other stuff now. Tracks Across Africa with Ivan was probably my favorite with Jim Shockey right behind it and the Professionals in their first season or two.

Dave,

Not an African show but the Sports Afield Alberta sheep hunt episode was pretty interesting. That's a little too close to a forest fire!

Hopefully the horses made it out ok?

Watched that one last night myself.

I scroll through the guide of Sportsman, Pursuit and Outdoor channels looking for things other than fishing or deer hunting shows. Ive seen some moose, bear, sheep, and African hunts. I even recorded a teal hunt in El Campo, TX that made me homesick.

I am right with you. Most of the hunting shows these days are hosted by folks with a lot less experience than Carter, Shockey, Boddington and the rest of the hunting titans of the past. They are also mostly sponsored by products I feel inferior to the ones I choose to use. They have just lost their luster to me.

I am reloading now; my loading room is off my TR, which has a TV. I have Sportsman on and they had a show called "On the Road with Rock and Aaron." The host shot a pronghorn and clearly hit it in the rear near the hip, but that didn't stop him from hooping and hollering. Earlier on a different show a guy shot at a caribou offhand and it looked like a low gut shot to me; the second one (using a rest) put him down.

It is amazing to me how many of these guys have never shot an elk, pronghorn, or caribou. But more than the lack of experience is the poor shooting; the trace of the bullet can often be seen.

Without a doubt, most of the "hunting shows" are all about the host. The host spends most of the show talking about themselves or explaining what is going on instead of hunting.

As mentioned earlier, some of the shots are very poorly placed. After a long break for the host to impress everyone again, the deceased animal is shown.

My favorite thing is after the shot, well placed or not, with the animal down and everything else in sight running like the wind, the know everything host is still whispering.

The talking IS absolutely the worst part of these shows!

It would not matter if someone would actually say something relevant, concise, and to the point and stop.

No.

I thought at some point that they get paid per word, the amount of rubbish is talked about.

I am actually surprised someone like Mark Sullivan did not get his own, weekly, show! clap

It might turn out to be the Bear Gryls of “hunting”!

Shallow, fake, irrelevant!

I used to buy hunting DVDs. I gave the lot away after watching some.

I remember in one some was hunting water buffalo somewhere.

They had a woman commentator, telling exactly what you are seeing on the screen!

“This is a water buffalo. They are VERY dangerous. That is why XYZ is using a 416 WEATHERBY MAGNUM. It is THE SECOND MOST POWERFUL RIFLE IN THE WORLD!”

The hunter is approaching the feeding buffalo in the open.

“XYZ is CAREFULLY STALKING the buffalo to get close. That is EXTREMELY dangerous.....”

By this time I turn the sound off.

A couple of DVDs later.

I am turned off these sort of shows.

I have been struggling with some health issues lately and my physical activity has been limited. That means a lot of reading and watching TV. I love guns and hunting but when it comes to the shows, I struggle with some of the issues pointed out in this and other threads. The predominant show now is of some redneck or other self-proclaimed celebrity gut shooting a deer with a bow. YouTube hunting videos range between great to sad and embarrassing.

I recently subscribed to "My Outdoor TV". It has most of the African hunting and other shows that are available on the cable networks. Dave Fulson's excellent shows are there, Under Wild Skies, and other well known hunting shows. It also has a lot of great shows I had never seen or heard of before. Another great thing is you can watch the shows whenever you like. I was able to watch a lot of great shows on my iPad while in hospital.

I have received no pay or other incentives from My Outdoor TV or any of its affiliates. Big Grin

As is appropriate, many mixed reviews.

As stated by Saeed and others, most of the hunting shows that I have seen bear little resemblance to what I have experienced outdoors; who cares why.

To be truthful, I have never watched as many as 10 such shows in my life! Would rather read a good book and even reread a good book.
