Here is to remembering Allen and a life well-lived! RIP...

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
- Rudyard Kipling

Life grows grim without senseless indulgence.

R.I.P. Allen.

Many thanks for posting this memorial Nickudu.

I missed his contributions here when he left, and was very sorry to hear he had become ill. I was even more saddened to hear of his passing last year.

I came to realize that Allen knew he was going to die a young man well before the event.

That can make a man focus on what's important to him, and I think Allen did just that.

RIP.

Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.
This be the verse you grave for me:
Here he lies where he longed to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

Good of you to do this, Nick.

Absolutely, a good man, to friend and family. It is very different to know your fate ahead of time. It changes ones perspective on the time sequence and what one does. It does not change ones beliefs or the end result. Allen was resolute in what he believed until the end. Some agreed with him some didnt. In the end he will be remembered for what he contributed. That and the way he made people feel.

Can't believe it's been a year already. AD and I shared several campfires and I miss our weekly phone visits to kibitz about hunting and guns. He was the real deal and a great friend.

Nice post and a great way to remember Allen. I had the privilege of speaking with him a couple times before my first Africa trip in 2002 - he offered great advice. Allen always made a great contribution her on AR. For those in contact with his family, hope you can pass along my condolences on is loss.

Thanks for that reminder. I read his letter and it expressed my own feelings. Allen looks pretty young is those photos. How old was he when he died?

Gentlemen Allen Day was a man who did not just dream, but made the things he wanted to do, happen. That fact alone made his fairly young passing less of a tragedy for him because he started out from average standings but made his way in the world so as to be able to do things most of us only wish we could do.

Many disagreed with Allen and as a result gave him so undeserved grief over his opinions of Mark Sullivan, and his staunch belief in CRF rifles from D`Arce Ecols (spl?) on this website. Allen was the only person I know of who hunted with Mark Sullivan who never had Mark shoot any of his animals! The only reason that is the case is because when Allen pulled the trigger the animal was headed for the salt. Because Mark never shot any of Allen’s animals he was always in MS’s corner in any debate about MS.

The grief that most of us get on occasion, about one thing or another, seemed to bother Allen so that he quite posting on AR and moved to NE website before he died. For that I want to apologize for the few members of this group, and particularly for any part, I personally, may have had in that stress! I only wish I’d done so before his passing!

We are diminished...

I went back and forth with him about Sullivan, mostly in PMs. He said something that stuck with me. "If you kill your animals cleanly, Mark just stands there; then congratulates you on the shot..."

Sullivan never pulled a trigger with Allen. That is a testament I could live with.

RIP, Allen. IIRC he left behind young daughters. Always a tragedy when that happens.

What happened to Allen Day?

I hate to ask, but reading a few of his words (quoted below) reveals that he and I have many of the same feelings about Africa and her animals.

Thanks.
