Friend of mine just got a Jack Russell pup and when I told him they were very popular in Africa he decided he wanted an "African" name. Any suggestions for a name (male) and the translation of course. DB Bill aka Bill George

Our Rhodesian Ridgeback is called Shumba which means lion but it might be a silly name for a Jack Russell... http://www.kapstadt.de/lemberg HUNTING ONE HOUR FROM CAPE TOWN

"Makoya" which should be zulu and means "original". Naturally he´d then be called Mac! "Ntondu" ic c-ck in Venda (not sure of the spelling) and he could be called Sucker!

Would you interested in a word from the Sangho language of Central Africa? Doli means elephant (pronounced with a long o, d-oh-ly). Kota Doli means big elephant, Kete Doli means little or baby elephant. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

"Chui" - Sindebele for Leopard. Because he surely will be a chewer. If you wanted to name a pig, "Mugabe" would be perfect.

He has to be called Gonzo!!!! We used our Jack's for ratting on the farm .They were awsome for this and origionally why most family's had them really ... they were alert and vigilant towards the night which gave a sense of security , a companion and they got the rats in and around the house. Cats were not too good at barking. The word is Shona for Rat and thats what my Jack was called ! Keep us posted on what is decided. Keith Rhodesian in UK Armed forces. I had a dog named KENYA! He lived 16 yrs, and would absolutely dive into a fight with a Mountain Lion, and fight till he was in tatters! Good question - we just went through that. Here is the result (don't laugh too loud) I said - name him a "manly name". My sons chose - "Stud Muffin". I said - No way. My wife said - OK by me. I said - "No, the name is for the dog, not me. She said - " I was thinking of the dog." I said - "thanks" and wimpered off to my dog box. The kids call him Stud. I call him Stupid based on his progress in the "brains department" so far. What is the African name for "Stupid"? I will rename my worthless lab that. My suggestion for you is - Capstick Good luck and have run with him.

Since JRs are such good trackers and are used for tracking wounded game in Africa, why not call him Landa. It means "to track"in Sindbele or Batonka. It is pronounced "Land-a". 465H&H

My original suggestion to him was "Jock" but the kids like the sound of "Shaka" but I think that won't make it as one will say Shaka" very dramatically and the other will whisper "ZULU" and everyone is already tired of it. "Mooshy" is gaining in popularity but I think Jock will be the eventual compromise winner. DB Bill aka Bill George

How bout "Mugabe"? Seems fitting for a dog "The atomic bomb made the prospect of future war unendurable. It has led us up those last few steps to the mountain pass; and beyond there is a different country." - J. Robert Oppenheimer

ManCannon, A JR is surposed to have a big heart and at least some brains. No, "Mugabe" won't do:he has a total lack of brains. My childwood JR was "Keelsie", the child's Afrikaans for where he aimed his bite at really big dogs he got in a fight with, and mostly killed by biting them on the throat.

DB, Stay away from names with long "o" sounds. Terriers can be hard headed enough, and they can be confused between names with long "o" and no! This week I'm babysitting the Granddog, a Jack Russell. It's been a busy week so far. We had an impressive dog fight on day one. My 65 pound Lab had to really roll up his sleeves to establish with the 12-pound visitor who the boss dog was (judging from my Lab's snout them Jack Russels are natural born knife fighters) I suggest you name your J-R a time saving name like "Godammit", "Stopit", or "Comehere" seem to be the ones I end up saying all the time.

One of the best blood tracking dogs I have ever had in Africa for the lodge was named bushman. I really liked that dog even though he would growl at me from time to time. He was a mixed breed and mean as the devil while in the bush although gental around the camp. He just did not like me taking things from him, or booting him out of my room or the lodge. I watched him fight with and kill a medium sized bush pig, about 125 pounds. He was a whopping 25-30 pounds, a tough little bugger! He was hit by a truck while running across a road. Funny thing is that road probably does not have a car per hour or two go down it during the day and even less at night. Odds are pretty low anything would get hit. Just his luck I suppose. I'll have another bushman one day.
