Ladies and Gentlemen,

Many of you know Horst, who has been with us on many safaris. He does not actually hunt, but loves animals and loves to take photos.

many of the great photoes we have posted here in the past have been taken by him.

Some of you have actually met him, either here when visiting us, or in Africa.

Early last year, he had a stroke, and was in a coma for a few weeks. He was in Austria at that time. Eventually he came out of the coma, and seems to be making quite a good recovery.

He can walk and talk, but tends to get tired rather quickly.

He is back in Dubai, and likes to come over and be with us here in the shooting room.

We took this photo of him yesterday as he was spotting for me while I was testing some rim fire ammo.

It is great to have our old friend with us, although I doubt he will be able to go to Africa again.

That great news, Saeed. Rehabilitative methods have come a long way over the years, and people have been able to resume their pre-stroke activities.

Here's to Horst's continued recovery!

Wonderful news!
My Grand Pop and my Pop both had strokes of differing severity, equivalent to progress of the times.
As miserable as modern medicine is, it is making progress in CNS salvage, rehabilitation, and prevention. Someday, after my stroke, if it ever happens, I will strive to do as well as Hosrt, spotting for his buddy. clap

Get that camera back in his hands and tell him to get to artistry! thumb

Keep at it Horst - I am sure you will be able to join the crew on an African hunt in the future. And if you need motivation, just remember that without you, Saeed is alone with Walter!

We always are shoe-less in the house.

In fact, I personally don't like shoes at all, and only wear them when I have to!

Walter says it brings me closer to my ancestors - stone age man. Who, apparently, I have not managed to break my linkage to him at all!

We wanted walter to be with us, but, our genius had one of his "loosing things" fits.

He called me on the phone.

Walter "I am on my way. I have been told by my wife not to eat too much sugar. So I want herbal tea and no sugar cookies"

Me "The herbal tea we can arrange, no sugar cookies we cannot. Just make sure you don't eat any of the cookies"

Walter "You keep telling me it is all in the mind. So if I think they are sugar-free, then it is OK to eat them"

It only takes him about 10 minutes from his house to our. Half an hour later he calls again.

I answer the phone "I thought you are supposed to be here?"
Walter "I was. But I have lost my car keys"
Me "Again? How?"

Walter "I don't know! Do you think I do this on purpose?"
Me "You must do, otherwise you won't do it so often"

He found his car keys in his wife's car when she came home later in the evening. He does not know how his car keys ended up in his wife's car. He hasn't put them there, neither had his wife!

The next day, he had a visitor from Chile, who he had arranged to take to the desert with my cousin to see the falcons being trained.

After his afternoon in the desert, he called me in the evening.

Me "Did your friends enjoy seeing the falcons?'
Walter "Yes"
Any time I get one word answers from Walter I know something is wrong.

Me "What went wrong?"
Walter "What do you mean what went wrong? How do you know anything went wrong? You must have arranged it then"

Me "Just tell me what happened. Did you take many photoes as I have asked you?"

Walter "You see? It was all your fault! If I did not try to take photoes nothing would have happened.

Me "Tell me what happened?"

Walter " I forgot my car keys in your cousin's car"

Me "Come on, there must be a longer story, so tell me"

Walter "I wanted to take photoes, as you have asked me. So I went to get my camera bag from the car. I did not want the camera bag to get full of sand. I got the camera from it, and left it in the car. I also put my keys on the dashboard"

Me "So did you take photoes?"

Walter "No. I forgot the memory card for the camera at home"

I laughed so much, and him screamig insults at me did not help much either.

When he got home, he picked his camera bag, and left his keys in my cousins car.

Saeed,
I never gave your shoeless benchrest style a second thought.
You'd fit right in at the range in Kentucky if you ever pass through the Bluegrass State. We never wear shoes here either. hillbilly

Please leave Walter in Dubai, looking for his car keys as always. Bring Horst.

Best wishes to Horst for a full recovery. I have a close friend where I work that has had several strokes. the last ones being just a year ago. He was taken off life support per his wishes. Four days later he was reviving on his own. Although he will probably never work again,(I'm not sure that's all bad) he can hunt and fish, I think there maybe something fishy about that (pun intended) but it goes to show the power of the human will.

Yesterday both Horst and Walter were here.
Horst still finds it hard to talk normally, so he speaks rather slowly.

Walter, carrying two large pieces of chocolate cake "Here Horsti, have a small piece of chocolate cake"

Horst shook his head, and put his hands up to say he did not want any.

Walter "Good, I will have the second one on your behalf. Saeed won't let me eat two otherwise, you don't mind me eating yours do you?"

Horst was laughing.

I left them sitting in the main room, and went into the shooting area to shoot. A few minutes later, I came out, and found horst in quite a bit of animation, talking to Walter.

Me "What are you two talking about?"
Walter "I am not sure myself. I just hope Horsti understand what he is saying. He is talking soooo slowly, my brain cannot slow that much to understand what he says!"

Horst was laughing so much by now, I was worried he might fall off his chair.

Me "You are really not very nice. Your friend is explaining something to you, the least you can do is pay attention!"

Walter "I AM paying attention, but, with you in the same room one finds it hard to concentrate!"

Me "What have I done now? I was in the other room!"

Walter "Yes, you were in the other room, blasting with that pistol like mad. I thought Horst's jaws were moving from the concussions, that is why I did not understand what he was saying!"

Tears were coming out of Horst's eyes, and he was shaking his head, and doing that universal jesture, pointing one finger to his temple and shaking it.

Walter "Ok OK Hosrti, who is mad, me or Saeed?"

Horst points at both of us.

Walter "Obviously he did not get hard enough knock on his head! Here, Hosrti, would you like me to give you some help? I have a plastic hammer here, a hard knock might get your brains back in shape again!"

Hosrt points at me.

Walter "I cannot hit him on the head. The hammer will break!
