I got THE seat on SSA to Jo'berg!

THE seat is 74D. It's the one at the rear of the plane that has nothing in front of it so you can stretch your legs.

Not having flown on the Airbus cattle car yet (the 747 was bad enough), the lady a Gracy said this was the only seat she could in good conscience book me into (I'm nearly 6'3").

Anyone familiar with this seat?

Does that mean if she has a conscience she will not book another ticket for any tall people

Most of the seats at the back of any plane do not recline, but I cannot imagine this would be true on this flight. Better check, however.

the one seat you never want to get is the row just ahead of any exit row, esp the window seat, because it doesn't recline.

Being at the back of the bus means a lot of people will get up and stretch their legs, lean on your seat, etc.

But if it reclines, it is a good one.

GA,
I don't know anything about the seat. However I'm only a shrinking 6'0". I think I should go in your place just to make sure it's OK for you. Big Grin

Say while I'm there I might as well hunt for you too? Eeker

Rusty,

This is a 404 Jeffery trip only!!!! Since I have not seen you post on the status of your 404 lately, I can only assume that you are not eligible for this hunt.

That's a damn shame, because I was considering not going and letting some other deserving member have my place (pre-paid by me or course) on the hunt. You would have been a perfect candidate! Big Grin Wink Big Grin

My 404 Jeffery project is still at John Ricks.

I haven't heard how far along it is.

Perhaps I should forward this to John so that perhaps it will be ready in time for me to hunt for you with MY 404 Jeffery.! Big Grin

Don't get too happy, the week before your trip SAA usually reshuffles everyone. On the 747, I've been booked on upstairs bulkhead both ways a few time, and always lose it on the way over. Started calling the weekbefore to try to avoid getting moved and one day you have it the next, "sorry but we don't guarentee seats and you have been moved". Not to burst your bubble, but be prepared.

We got the seat behind the bulkhead both ways--I think it was row 67...It was the best of the lot--I'm 6'4 and the legroom was sufficient.....

GaHunter:

I had that seat going to J'burg this November. Amazingly, none of the other seats on that row were occupied and I got to stretch out and sleep the whole way... and when I wanted to, I could stand and "exercise" in my own private little space where the seat "wasn't".

The only problem about that seat is that it's rather close to the heads and sometimes folks will back up in the aisle awaiting their time to do their business. Their talking can keep you awake, so I just slept with soft music playing over the provided headset.

Leon: Do you need my "back-up" scope again? Cool

You have a good 'un!

Judge,

No I don't need the backup on this trip. I've got several, and should something happen to the scope on the 404, I'll use the iron sights, which are perfectly regulated for 400-grain bullets.

You don't suppose you could arrange for the seats next to me to be empty on this trip do you? Naw, I didn't think so.

On my last trip over, I had an exit row seat. The seat reclines & there is almost 40" of leg room. The down side is everyone wants to walk through because it such a wide aisle, but it was nice to stretch out.
GA, I took my .404 as the only rifle on my trip & it was fine. I just took an extra scope in rings, never needed it though.

I had a seat on my last SAA flight near the back with a large "box" between me and the window (where a seat normally is) and an empty one between me and the aisle. The "box" made a nice table and two seats together a reasonably comfortable bed.

Ha ha.

Gahunter,

Don't want to bust your bubble...but when I flew on the airbus this summer...I received four different seat assignments...The 4th was when I checked in and was given a new seat assignment...
I do know that exit seats have longer leg room and they are also assigned the morning of the flight...Good luck...

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
