whenever we go we like to take a gift or 3 along for the PH, outfitter, tracker etc. some of the best have been: bright colored shirts, hats for the trackers etc. a chefs knife for the cook, knives for the skinners, handicrafts for the kids, things that are easy for us to obtain, but are difficult or impossible for the people there to get are most appreciated (especially in zim) I don't think i ever met a PH that wasn't a fisherman and a new rod/reel brings bright lights to their eyes, so does one of the little portable dvd players for use in his tent/camp. just a couple of ideas

I knew about the usual list of stuff (hats, shirts, knives, etc.), but opted for a different approach. I got on the net and found a low ball price for about 10 of those no-battery wind up flashlights. I think that they came to about $7 each. I gave one to everyone that was involved with my hunt directly (truck staff). The native staff in my camp pretty much sat around in the dark by firelight in their little attached village and I knew they would never be able to get batteries for a real light. Anyway, they seemed to enjoy the gift (once it was explained), but then again for all I know they sold it on their first visit to town.

The two most popular items on our last trip, sunglasses and frisbees. They wore the shades darn near every day and would spend hours in the middle of the day tossing the frisbees.

Those are all good gift ideas but don't forget the PH's family. I brought over clock/barometer/thermometer combo for their farm, voltage transformers (220AC/110AC), 2-way radios, first aid items, t-shirts from the USA (especially your college team), food saver, ziplock bags, and things that we take so much for granted in the states but are hard to find or more costly in Africa). Do not give the kids electronic games such as PS3 or gameboys - it'll ruin the kids' minds.

Speaking of fishing, many African lakes now hold our Largemouth Bass; many are now topping 13 pounds. Take a few plastic soft baits (large worms 9 inches or larger), top water baits (buzz baits, Zara Spooks) and spinner baits. In many water ways, Bass have never seen these baits. Nothing like a 10 pound Bass stretching your line. Quality mono fishing line such as Berkley would be good too. LDK

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Just my two cents here but:

If you choose to give knives to the skinners, I recommend doing it at the very end of your safari. It takes a little while to get the "feel" of a knife. Don't let them get the "feel" of it while working on your trophies!

I am a firm believer in running your ideas for staff gifts by the PH first. There can be unintentional results. The way I see it, the staff works for the PH not for you. The PH will know what is appropriate.

That being said, I think generally money is the best gift for the staff.
