SBTNo, I would not. Sable are so incredibly beautiful, I would not want a non-typical as my representative trophy.

Agree, plus correct me if I'm wrong but it looks quite young. Now if it was culled like those impala with the straight horns that kill during fights I totally understand.

meteLast fall at a preserve I took a young red deer whose antlers went out to the side .It was a cull of course though we wondered if it was a cross , deer X goat !
Take it as a cull not a trophy.

The real question for me is would anyone send it to his taxidermist for a skull mount!
It would be tempting. Ninety degrees of right angled horn growth might not be unique in the world, but it's got to be rare!
I know a hunter of German extraction from Namibia whose trophy room is lined with skull mounts of freakishly deformed horned game.
I have to say it makes for quite a demonstration of how bizarre nature can be!

jdollarfrom looking at the color it seems to be an immature bull. regardless of configuration, i wouldn't shoot it. not a mature animal.

I passed one tusker ( 70+) first time elephant hunting on first day, being first bull.
Still think about him. Glad I passed him, because I had incredible 15 days of elephant hunting with 40 lbs bull on the ground last day and several charges during that hunt.
But I would never ever pass him again.

JefffiveLooks more likely to be damage than genetic, not sure that left eye was functional. Might have been an early injury it did well to survive. Like to see the skull.

Todd WilliamsI'd pass. I like non-typicals and all but in this one's case, the animal seems to be a bit young. I'd pass based on it's age.

The whole point of effective culling is to get him out of the gene pool before he breeds and passes along his bizarre genetic traits.
That's the only way I'd go for this sable - as a cull - as I prefer typical, representative trophies.
If I were after him as a mature trophy, that would pose some difficulties, I would imagine, although I don't know the details of this hunt.
I can't speak for Guy, but for culling purposes, I would think that any outfitter who found an animal like this one while out hunting trophies would likely want him shot regardless of age.

Yes they are, but on all 3 of my safaris I have been ask to dispatch animals that had been hurt or were very old.

zimbabweIn a New York minute. I have absolutely no aversion to shooting a non-typical. Even to the point of spending my trophy dollars. This is a moot value since I really didn't take trophies when I was hunting. Out of 8 safari's I have a pair of tusks from my last safari and 2 zebra rugs,one I paid for and one a gift from my PH. Oh I have ONE Duiker horn. I shot a Duiker for the boys meal and to not destroy any meat shot him in the head. A 270gr Partition 375H&H does bad things to a skull. They only found one horn but the meat was whole for them. Found out later I shouldn't have done it and I paid the fee for it. They really didn't get a very good diet.

TGDjrSable are, IMHO, the most beautiful African game. I will probably only take 1 ever. With these circumstances, I would not take the animal as my trophy.
However, for no fee, or a reduced fee while not actually after Sable, I would consider it.

I suppose there isn't much of a difference between hurt or very old, both candidates worthy of being put out of their misery and very healthy with a horn deformity more likely as a result from injury than to genetics and quite sought after by some hunters.
In this case the animal was rather immature but still a trophy in itself to some.

CrazyhorseconsultingWere I ever to go to Africa, I would shoot that animal in a heart beat. To me it looks like the left eye is gone, so the animal had reduced survival chances. I view this as a case of personal choice. While many judge a trophy by inches or age, others judge by uniqueness, nothing is wrong with either in my opinion.
Even the rocks don't last forever.
