Recently heard thrid-hand (or farther removed) that an aquaintance near Ellisras has lost his farm. Haven't seen him for eighteen months and have lost communication months ago. I know there were a number of farms under claim but last I knew his wasn't. Anyone on the ground there have any news? SafariHunt you know anything?

Don't feel comfortable posting names or other specifics but maybe we could PM if there is something to report.

Oupa,

If you take the road from Ellisras to Marken there is a whole big strip of farms claimed alsmost all the farms next to the road from just before Tafelkop to just before Marken. And the strip goes 2-3 farms from the road as well.
Then in the Marken area it gets worse that is why Lapalala wilderness closed down. So it seems that it is only in that area. A very big area and I cannot see that they will give all the farms away they will have to concentrate on one big part instead of given litlle piece by piece.

That is as far as I know. The claims have all been put trough very early when the claims started and I dont know excatly how far the claims are in standing now.

There are a number of farms/ranches in the Eastern Cape that have been "bought" by the RSA Gov't. Worse yet, some huge ranches have been bought by Americans to are going to high fence the land, put the Big 5 on it and open it ONLY to tourists. No hunting will be allowed. I can't wait until they discover two things: liability and an Elephants take on high fences. LDK

The land claim thing was happening to the parents of our PH back in May, 2007. Their farm is East of Ellisras/Laphalale off R518. The RSA government was "buying" the land on behalf of the claimants. The family was very upset, since no one had operated on the land since they came to it as Boers. The angry part of the situation appears to be that the claims have all been made on farms that abut onto the roads, and had nice looking buildings, etc.. and this farm is a gorgeous one. The deadline for the claims supposedly ended nearly ten years ago, and the RSA is just now getting around to passing their "judgements" against the whites. Sooner or later, much of this land may go the way of Zim, if smarter cooler heads do not finally prevail.

At the end of the day one needs to put aside (nostalgia and attachement) to the family home/farm as reality dictates that once a land claim is formally gazetted and finally passes the legal judgement hurdle, then you may as well piss into the hurrricane as you will have to eventually vacate.

Some landowners prefer to take the legal challenge route and that is their perogative, if they succeed I commend them, but at the end of the day any legal challenge will cost lots of money and is not guaranteed success. Some people say stick to ones principles, but if you end up with little or no money no land and your priciples still in tact that does not make much logic to me.

My brother Alan the landowner did not personally challenge the commercial aquisition of his Limpopo Ranch that was claimed and to date all has gone OK and he is still living and hunting the property and he does not yet have any vacate date so life goes on. He has three other ranch properties in Zambia and one other in SA to keep him afloat in the interum

Cheers, Peter

Sierra2,

Eaxctly the strip I was talking about to be claimed was on that road East of Ellisras and like you said most of the farms claimed are next or close to the road.

BTW. Unfortunately no deadline as been set anymore to claim a farm if you can prove that your ancestors stayed there or has graves on the farm you can still claim.
