Last night I was planning this year’s antelope hunt. I started thinking how our antelope hunting is a little like springbok hunting; then deer – impala and elk – kudu (sort of). It got me wondering, how many African PHs have hunted in the States? How many non-American Safari Hunters hunt in the States? I know Africa has a “couple” more animals to hunt, but have you guys hunted in the US? | ||

My friends Frank, Denham and Meyrick Bowker (RSA:Eastern Cape) have hunted in the US. I know they've taken nice Whitetail bucks. Tried a couple of times- from a genuine redneck rabbit hunt to chasing cougar with hounds. My mate Scott Guthrie has taken all the bears... most PH's are actually interested in hunting  and it is aways nice to hunt something new!! | |||

I hunted with a PH in Zim in 2003. Not the U.S., but he had hunted black bear in Canada. He was a bit pissed because he passed on all the bears that came to bait, but still had to pay the same amount as hunters who took bears. He did not understand that we don't have trophy fees as part of the hunt cost. Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. My 2008 PH from Tanzania came and deer, duck, and quail hunted with me this past January between the conventions. I'm sure quite a few other PHs have done something along that line when on this side of the pond. I've had 2 other PHs and both said they have hunted to some degree when over here. | |||

I've had several South African PHs book hunts for Aoudad with me. NM season works out perfect for them as they are in country for the shows. Seems they can't hunt them over there even though there's lots of terrain that would be perfect for DooDads in South Africa. Each of them were great hunters and good shots so getting them a nice trophy wasn't a problem. They all want to hunt elk w/me but we can never schedule it for them as Nov & Dec seems to be PH family time. Zim PH Brent Hein usually hunts with me while he is here for the shows. He has taken axis, blackbuck antelope, fallow, sika, aoudad, hogs and varmits. Here is a fallow buck he guided my son to this year.  | |||

I found this quote from Philip Percival very interesting regarding his view of hunting in America. This is from his book, Hunting,Settling and Remembering (page 131&133). "I have never been a hoarder of East African trophies, perhaps because the animals they represent have belonged to me much of my daily life;but my American trophies I regard as beyond price, even when in the midst of cusses, I trip over the enormous head of the grizzly bear, whose skin lies on my bedroom floor". Ganyana, a couple of questions: 1. How did you sort out the redneck rabbits from the regular one? Did you PH point them out, or did you figure it out on your own? 2. I'm surprised you would shoot a redneck rabbit. Might have been a distant relative of mine, and of some other of your American buddies!

There are several PHs who run hunting operation in the USA off season. Many hunt Alaska as well for the bears there. A friend PH of mine told me off going on a goose hunt on the east coast! He couldn't believe the cold he had to indure, and the bag limit he was saddled with. Tarveled 100 miles, froze nearly to death, for two geese! I have really wanted to have my PH friends from Africa hunt deer and elk with me here in Idaho. I think it would be a wonderful exchange, and would be lots of fun. The insanity (beauracracy ???) of the issue is that because they are under 35 and do not have Idaho hunter safety, the State will not accept their own country's hunting license or PH creddentials! We can't get them a license here, even tho they are probably more qualified and safer than whoever would give them a class. No internet classes allowed either. There is a list of European countries that our "powers that be" accept, but no African ones on it at all. | |||

Blank, There is indeed a problem with our "Hunter Safety" rules here in the US. There needs to be some provision whereby we can recognize credentials or, preferably, when supervised by a licensed guide or outfitter, dispense with the requirement altogeather. In the years I spent your side of the pond, and the visits over there, I hunted across several states, mostly by invitation. Grouse, Quail, geese, whitetail, pheasant, pronghorn and muley. I saw bears every year for 3 years wander past me in Pa, until I was lucky enough to draw a tag, and naturally did not see squat. Pa recognised my PH qualifications, this was in 89.
