According to a (fairly ) reliable source, only five species of game animal are legally huntable in at least ten of the following twelve countries: Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, CAR, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Anyone care to venture a guess (without looking it up)? Combined subspecies don't count (ex: reedbuck). (Hope I didn't miss any and my math is right.)

Stevie, I think you right except maybe hippo, can't hunt them in Bots. and I don't think CAR or Cameroon either. I may be incorrect. Steve Formerly "Nganga"

No Leopard in Benin or Burkina Faso. Pretty sure Croc is not on license in those two countries either. (Could be mistaken on this though.)

Here's a (fairly ) reliable source that might help: http://www.shakariconnection.c...-species-a-to-c.html http://www.shakariconnection.c...-species-d-to-e.html http://www.shakariconnection.c...-species-f-to-h.html http://www.shakariconnection.c...-species-i-to-n.html http://www.shakariconnection.c...species-o-to-si.html http://www.shakariconnection.c...species-si-to-z.html We're also in the throes of rebuilding the site to make it easier to navigate, give it a new look and add a LOT more info. When that's launched you'll also find other countries/info added.

TOOOOOO GOOD. Question is, does anyone know a taxidermist who will mount him??

I was waiting for a few more guesses and then I forgot about it. I will say this though. All three guessers got warthog - that's one. Stevie got two others and JBrown got one other. Scottyboy just got the warthog, so you you can eliminate the buff, reedbuck, waterbuck and bushbuck. I'd say that 3 of the remaining 4 are guessable. But if you get the 5th one, you really know your stuff (or you looked it up).

Which of these countries don't have buffalo and waterbuck on quota? My new list: warthog, baboon, duiker, buffalo, and waterbuck. And I don't understand the combined subspecies exclusion. Lion, leopard, hippo, croc and warthog are the only animals I can think of with a single subspecies common over most of Subsharan Africa. But not all are huntable everywhere(lion and hippo are out in Botswana right?) But I am wrong more often than not..... So what gives? Well, I’m going by the breakdown used by that source - which lists a total of 168 separate huntable species or subspecies. When you combine subspecies, the list gets a lot longer, but some of the subspecies are so different from one another that I just decided to keep them all separate. Take baboon for example; as you surmised, you can hunt one or another subspecies of baboon in every one of those countries, but they’re way different from one another, so I kept them separate. The Chacma can only be hunted in 7 countries. Same with waterbuck – at least one subspecies in every country, but even the most widely available, the Common Waterbuck, can only be hunted in 7. When it comes to buff, you may have a point. Aside from our own very popular “Cape Buffalo”, the site has the Central Savannah Buffalo, North Eastern Savannah Buffalo, and Western Savannah Buffalo all listed as separate and distinct subspecies, but I’d be willing to bet that they’re all really just cape buff in a different region – so I may have to give you that one. (Forest Buff is separate). This is getting to be more work and less fun than I figured. Croc – 8 countries. Leopard – same 8 countries. Duiker - no comment. Hell, I think I’m giving it away.

I think the whole thing falls apart when we start to discuss what is and is not a valid subspecies. I would be just be happy to know what five you had in mind when you started this mess. You got it Jason. I've got to leave town today anyway. Warthog - all 12 countries Hippo - all except Bots Lion - all except Bots Common Oribi - all except Bots Common Duiker - all except Bots and Tz I thought it interesting for a couple of reasons. 1) I've hunted in a few of those countries and never once heard Oribi mentioned. Never even saw one. But if there so widely huntable, you'd think they'd get more mention. 2) With all the concern about Lion, I was suprised that they can be hunted everywhere but Bots. Anyway it's all at Steve(Shakari)'s website - links above. Steve - one thing I'd like to see on your new website is the animal weights - even better, a link to full descriprion, range, habits etc. Later, S.
