I am thinking about building a 450 Marlin on a FN Mauser with a 21 inch barrel, and a synthetic stock. It would have a 4+1 magazine, and a big bolt handle for those sticky situations. Probably not the greatest ellie gun in the world, but would be fun for pigs and bears.

What do you think?

Top it with a 1.5-5 Schmidt and Bender illuminated and go to town?

Personally, I think that a 458 WinMag would be a better way to go since 458 brass is much easier to get and you can load it down to manageable levels for boars and bear. The 450 suffers the same lack of powder capacity as the 45/70 and with slightly less cap than the 45/70.

I agree except I am not looking for a rifle to hunt elephant, I am looking for a gun for pigs and bear alone. Might use it on plainsgame, but not elephant, or buffalo.

Not a real fan of lever actions so that's the draw.

Think of this as me wanting a bolt action 45-70, not of me wanting a elephant gun.

I want something that's fast handeling, and easy to carry, not a 11 pound monster that I shoot 350 X bullets out of at 2200 FPS.

Thanks though,

You might post this in big bores...

since the 450 marlin is nothing but the 458 2", it would be a fine fun rifle...

That was really good advice.

Thanks Jeff, looks like your on the ball with that one.

I knew it would only appeal to a limited but select group.

I second the idea about the .458 win mag....it can be loaded down to the .450 marlin and you will have a better rifle all round, much more versatile with better resale.

I'll 3rd it. Whose going to buy a 450 when your done with it. Get a .458 Winnie and load it down, then the pressure goes down also.

Let's put it like this--450 brass is unique in that it only has a thicker belt than any other belted brass out there and how long is it going to be marketed? Once the 450 Marlin is dropped from the line in the future because it offers no advantage over the 45/70, brass will be very hard to come by unless you lay into hundreds of pieces right now; whereas the 458 WinMag brass will be around till I die or longer. If you run out of 458 brass, any other belted brass can be made to do. Last of all, 458 brass is much cheaper. For your needs, a rifle in about 8# wouldn't be out of line since you'll never light off the bigger loads anyway.

JEEZE, maybe I am the only one that is getting this. I want this gun to weigh 7.5 pounds not 11! Who is going to buy a 458 Winchester that weighs 7 or 8 pounds?

I know the brass is limited, I know it won't have resale value for shit, I know the 458 is more versatle.

If I needed a 458 I would build one, I don't need a 458, as I have a 416 Remington magnum, so I don't need a 458. I want a bolt action 45-70!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IT'S A SCALED DOWN GUN USED FOR HUNTING PIGS AND BEAR, THINK 45-70 BOLT ACTION!!!!!

I think you're turning your back on the exact advice you gave the guy that wanted a 338-376?

Hello KOKDYER

They are just not going to let you build a 450 Marlin on a Mauser will they!! Seriously, as a suggestion only, you might want to look into the possibility of building the cartridge you are talking about on the Mosin Nagant whatever model they are using. Do understand that it works for the 45/70 w/ little modifications and might work w/ the 450?? Just a suggestion since we are not going to let you build one a Mauser. Good Luck and favor center!!

If you want a bolt-action .45-70, you could get locate an 1888 Siamese Mauser, or just go ahead and built the .450 Marlin on an M98.

Since you asked this question on the African Big Game Hunting forum, most responses will be geared with that subject in mind.

BTW, instead of getting a big bolt knob, just bend the bolt handle upwards so it will be easier to manipulate.

Go for it as they are a "fun" gun and very versatile. Built on a Remington 700 short action w/22" Pac-Nor barrel w/Vais muzzle brake, Bansner stock. Amazing performance with everything from light to heavy cast bullets up to full-power hunting loads that exceed 4,000 ftlbs of muzzle energy. Weight is just under 7 pounds that way it is in the photo.

I haven't shot any live game with it but it pounds big rocks into small pieces blasts stumps into splinters.

Get a Browning Safari in 458. Everyone bitches about them being too light, and in a synthetic stock it would be even lighter. It would be cheap to buy and if you get sick of it you still have the Mauser action to use for a plains game rifle. Hope this helps, Okie John.

DB Bill:

Nice!

Short action M700 would work too wouldn't it?

Then you could use a custom DBM and go to town.

NICE!

The short action Rem 700 works very nicely but I must admit I'm not a fan of detachable magazines.....way too many things can go wrong with them. I don't plan on using it on dangerous game so 4 shots should be enough.

I just realized DB Bill that you though I meant detachable magazine when I said DBM.

I meant: Dropped Box Magazine.

No I don't like detachables either.

I wanted the same thing: a bolt action 45-70, so I'm building the 458 Win. Much easier to get stuff for, and way more flexible, even if I never load it all the way up. I have the same specs as you. I wanted overall weight to be ~8 lbs, 22" bbl, 4 in the mag, shooting deer/hogs, etc. Except I'm not using optics; just a good peep sight. the_captain

Amigo,
I have a 458 winmin in a 8.25# gun.. that i built for my youngest and smallest son...

I hunt pigs with it allot!!

I use 405's at 2450... it totally rocks.

If you reread my post, you'll see i agree with it and "get" it... a 458 x2" is exactly what the 450 marlin is except the marlin has a taller belt.

the 458 winMAG is 2.5" brass

Okie John,

I saw a Browning Safari in 458 Win at the Scheels Sporting Goods Store in Appleton last week and it felt really heavy. Didn't feel light at all but it was very nice and smooth with very attractive wood and some engraving on the floorplate.

Good hunting!
