I have decided to begin selling my double rifles. I have no family to leave anyting to and when it's my time to go, I want to go with nothing but memories. So my doubles (and lots of other stuff) will be going on the block. I just sold my 4-bore and have an agreement for my .350no2, .500, and .600 with 14 more to go (I'm keeping a few to hunt with).

I want to turn the money into hunting and have a question for you:

Where is the best place to go for elephant, lion, and leopard? Where ever you suggest, please tell me if the animal(s) are importable into the USA.

Sounds like a great plan!!! To bankroll my first trip this previous sept with Buzz I did a little clean out on my gunsafe. 4-5 guns and 8-9k later it helped a lot.

And I haven’t really missed any of them that much either. They were mainly safe queens which I didn’t use that much. No regrets. I’d I do so again if it meant more hunting in Africa.

I’ll be watching the classifieds for your posts. Always on the lookout for a double.

On elephant, Cal, suggest the Caprivi Strip in Namibia. You can find a bull of 50 lbs a side, and, with luck, get into the 60s. Lion seems to take a mortgage to finance a hunt. Leopard much less so, and others are better qualified than I to give advice on either.

Cal for a true Big 4 hunt one of the GMA’s in the Luangwa Valley of Zambia. You could also do it in the Save Conservancy and Matetsi areas in Zim.

10 years ago I would have included Niassa in Moz and Selous in TZ but no more.

Sango. Save Valley Conservancy. Big Elephant, Good lion, very good leopard. Currently import of ivory into US is a problem from I believe most countries? It certainly is from Zim.

I do believe if you have favorite species, hunt them more often

My philosophy
Definitely true with Elephants in my book

Cal for elephant that’s importable to US then Namibia is the best choice. It’s a crapshoot at the moment on importing from anywhere, but Namibia is the safest bet by far.
It’s also got lots of ele and size of ivory is right up there.
Lion and leopard you’d have to say Zambia if you want to import. Otherwise Zim has all 3 you want
But import will be difficult

The best of AR would be Buzz in Zimbabwe for Elephant and an optional upgrade for Leopard or Lion. Lion and Leopard can be had easily in Zambia. Hunt a big Buff in Uganda.

Hunt the unfenced concessions and experience the wild.

My vote for leopard would be with Buzz in Dande North. He has been near 100% on Mr. Spots over the last 20 years. He put Vicki on a very nice cat last summer, grumbling all the while about the fact that it took a week to get it done! You could also take another buff. If you really want the crap scared out of you, you could do early season for tuskless cows, which would leave you with no import problem. Then on to the Luangwa Valley for lion with Andrew, as it is not a great distance. Oh, and by the way, do you still have that 450 No.2? Cheers, my friend. Tim

Ann: you're correct but I will be limted as to what is importable.
Tim & WR500: I've never looked to Namibia except for plains game. I will look at big game there.

It seems like Zambia and Zimbabwe with Buzz are high on your lists. I met Buzz last August on the shores of the Zambezi.

George sees a lot of stuff from me mentioning Redding Auction up in PA, as they a big time gun auction place. But Elmer's stuff was sold by James Julia, and Poulin's next door to it. They have the name draw, so get a lot of the famous stuff. Elmer had acquired Col Corbett's DR that he used to kill a number of man eating tigers and such with. Found out who had it and bought it for $500 years back. It sold for $250K. Went from opening at $75K to quarter mill in 3 bids.

Luangwa for a lion/elephant/leopard hunt would also be a good place to go from what I’m told by clients who’ve been there. I’d contact Werner Van Noordwyk or Peter Chipman. They seem to have access to most of the Luangwa areas and they are great guys too.

Does Mark Sullivan not offer canned elephant hunts?

He did lions and buffalo!

Julia was merged into (bought by) Morphy. I used to buy a lot from Julia but after giving Morphy a couple of tries I am now looking elsewhere.

Some of Julia's people and their facility ended up at Poulin. So I expect that outfit is looking to grow. Will give them a look.

The other big auctioneer is Rock Island.

Make sure you ask how much commission they are taking. They get you coming and going and it can be substantial. Same applies to the English auctioneers. Holt in particular is avaricious, in addition to being difficult to deal with.

You can sell a gun online for a pittance compared to what these big auction houses charge.

If you read further up you will see I mentioned Sango.
I just recently spent sometime with Werner in Cameroon. I hunted with one of his clients and he accompanied his client. He showed me lots of photos of the Luangwa. Impressive.

George: Asking on AR is wonderful as there is so much experience here. I learn something new often here. Information from others will cover what I am bound to overlook.

Russ: I buy at auctions but never sell at auctions as it is a crap shoot. I prefer not to advertise and keep it quiet and sell between folks I know. So far it has been 100% positive and I don't have to deal with the endless tire kickers.

Peter Chipman in Zambia has amazing elephant areas where your pretty much going to get all your after. Zambia has the best chance of getting your trophies out(lion & elephant) chat to peter about that. He doesn’t bullshit. Thierry Labat in ZIM on sango is a sure bet but the trophy export isn’t easy. Guav Johnson has matetsi unit two if your after a monster elephant, with good lion and leopard available but less chance of export. Good luck , I like your plan.

While the areas that others have mentioned are great for specific game, a couple places stand out to me, in no particular order.

Northern Cameroon for Lord Derby Eland... and it gets you out of Alaska while it’s cold and snow up to your neck.

Masailand. I’d do a buffalo hunt on a 21 day license and try and get the specialty plains game.

You also should do a 21 day full bag hunt in the Selous before they ruin it with this dam(n) idea.

Sitatunga and Buffalo in Uganda.

All were immensely enjoyable and different spots than you have talked about before. The lord derby hunt is probably the most physical hunt I’ve done in Africa, but it is done by folks in worse shape than you appear to be.

Cal , RWS may be able make a good offer in some of their areas in the conservancy and the Dollar block just outside bulawayo. Gerry Whitehead has always spoken very highly of you and passes on his regards.He visits humani and the Whittall family 2 or 3 times month. Still hunting with his long bow.

Elephant may become exportable some time in the future as all on a legal Cites quota.

Lion is possible just a lot of paperwork.

Leopard no problem at all.

Cal. Since they have not been mentioned, Bubye is great for leopard and lion hunts but less so elephants and since it’s Zim all those problems with export. My PH Japsie Blaauw (Dzombo safaris) now has Nyae Nyae area south of Kaudom in Namibia and that has produced some heavy ivory. He can arrange the cats also. Got me a 47” buffalo.

Sounds wonderful and Cal should be looking at a number of options. I would love to be able to commit to this safari but I know nothing about Elephant hunting and therefore not prepared to conduct it. However there are a number of us that sell safaris on success and I suggest this route.

Is this the same Nyae Nyae Conservancy that Stephan Jacobs was hunting?

I m not sure who had the conservancy before Jaapsie but he took over it. He was at DSC this year and confirmed he had it. It’s a large area he has. He also goes to Caprivi and Klaserie. I ve been thinking of going to the conservancy area next year.

Not sure where the information came from but Stephan Jacobs has the Nyae Nyae and he does not have any partners. Dzombo Safaris may have the conservancy south of the Nyae Nyae, Ondjou Conservancy. As far as Stephan's elephant , I don't think he sells any of them to other outfitters. Thought it needed to be cleared up.
