There are many others on this forum with more knowledge about current pricing, but I would venture to say it would be impossible for 80K. Their licenses were for a full bag - they just didn't see any cats to speak of while hunting, and the elephants they saw were not of trophy quality.

I am not sure if my father has the Weatherby.

1965 = $12,000
2008= $81,184

Nearly a years salary for alot of people.

Could you get a similar safari today for 80,000?

mrlexma,

Glad to share the pictures, it's been a lot of fun for my father and I.

Good catch about Ruark passing away in 1965. Pretty interesting story surrounding the timing - my father and grandfather were hunting with Selby at that time. Of course, they knew about his relationship with Ruark, and were hoping to hear some stories about their safaris, but the subject didn't come up for some time, and they didn't want to come across as "groupies", so they didn't press the issue. As I recall the events, one night, out of the blue, Selby shared some stories and thoughts about Ruark - about as classic of a night around a campfire as one could imagine. Later that night, or the next morning, Selby got word via the radio that Ruark had died in London. In backtracking through the timeline of that night, it turns out that Ruark passed away as nearly the same time that Selby was telling those stories...makes for a good campfire story in itself!

Looks like those newfangled Weatherbys worked pretty well, huh? Big Grin

Coincidentally, 1965 was the year Ruark died.

Thanks for the reply.

Truly an awesome post, pictures & story. I'm sure that if your dad posted on AR he would be barraged with even more questions.

You've really shared a treasure. Many thanks.

For $80K, 2 people can still have a epic mixed bag safari. Getting multiples of some species on license probably isn't going to happen, with a few exceptions.

$80K? That's only $500 a month for about 14 years. You'll have it paid of before you run out of stories. Wink

Wow, just found these... how cool! What some of us wouldn't give to have had a safari with Selby at that point in time! Something tells me the folks getting off that plane in their Sunday best hadn't experienced the SAA Airbus from Hades!

Thanks again for sharing!

If AR held Oscar's this post would clean up in the "Nostalgia" category.

Well done!

Mike,

I believe my father shot his buff with .375 that Harry Selby had in camp. The Weatherby was a .300, and I believe my grandfather had his .30-06 with him. I don't know if he shot any DG on that trip. My Dad has the list of trophies sent the the taxidermist - I am trying to get it.

Brant - There must be something wrong here, I am not able to see your pictures. I now even can't see pictures on your Tanzania post, before I could.

Is it just me? I can see pics on other posts.

I need to sign up for more bandwidth at photobucket.com - evidently these posts have exceeded the amount allocated for free accounts.

My pleasure Aziz, I am glad others have enjoyed them. It's been a lot of fun for me to learn more about the hunts my Dad and Grandfather did well before I was born. We've been able to do some great hunts together, but obviously they did some that can't be replicated today.
