What do you old Africa hands use as a day pack while in the field hunting? Do you use a small back pack, a shoulder bag of some description, a fanny pack? Or do only woosies carry day packs - real men just venture out with their rifle and the shirt on their back?

Wooley,

No day pack. There is no need since the you won't need extra clothes, knives, saws, axes, food etc.. The only things you might want to have along that would be inconvenient is a video camera and one of the crew can carry that. Everything else can be carried on your person.

Rifle, ammo, binos, TP, pocket camera, lens cleaner, sunglasses and a knife or multi tool are all I find necessary.

Like Mark, I do not carry a day pack however I do put a cheap one on the truck each day.

It has extra water, a couple cameras, extra bullets, a knife, reading glasses, a book of matches, compass, a book for the lunch break on the trail, some hard candy for the trackers in it etc.

When we set out on foot I only carry whatever fits in my pockets or on a belt.

If someone else (water-boy or tracker) volunteers to carry my pack on the trail I do not discourage them. I don't know if they consider it an honor but they don't seem to mind.

Wooly,

I think a day pack is useful to have along in the vehicle to hold odds and ends plus spare clothing for the morning/evening ride back to camp.

A fairly small day pack is fine, but take a short strap and a snap-link to that you can hang it on the roll bar/metalwork on the back of the truck..If you leave it kicking about in the back, it will probably either end up covered in blood or crushed as animals ect are loaded..

Regards,

Pete

I am the only one of my hunting buddies that carries a small back pack as a day pack. The main reason is that I am a diabetic and have to carry my meds and other stuff. But usually one of the staff ends up carry it for me.

I used to leave a back pack in the truck but many times found myself out of water or something minor I wish I had brought with me. Not long ago I found a Varmit hunting vest made my Primos (call company) and used it Turkey hunting in Texas this year. It leaves with me in two weeks for Africa. Anything you would need will fit into that vented vest: water, food, candy, shotgun or rifle shells, camera, video camera, batteries, small knife, bino's, rangefinder, first aid etc. It doesn't have to be much, but one of those "just in case" garments. Light weight and roomy. Even has a tiny compass, temp gauge and a few other pockets for gun permit, passport etc. I found it to be just the ticket. One of the cool features: a pull out padded seat so your arse doens't get wet or have to sit in mud. Good hunting, LDK

Like most, I don't carry a pack on myself while out. I do take one along in the truck with extra everything just in case. everything I need I can carry on my waist, range finder, knife, extra ammo, and a multi tool to pull those damn thorns out of my boots and legs.

Graygohst, surley you're not worried about getting a little dirty!! Hell, if I ain't dirty or bloody I don't feel like I've been hunting. A few short weeks til we're in the Eastern cape again, looking forward to it buddy. We'll have to have a little side bet for number of species taken.

Good luck with the Duiker, Dave Big Grin I was hunting Common Reedbuck in the Waterberg mountains and a lovely 6" Duiker jumped up, not 25 yards from my 257WBY. Sheer bloody luck!! Smiler

Because I carry a fair bit of camera gear I take a Lowepro bum bag which fits a largish video camera. Plus a small SLR lens, a telephoto SLR lens, SLR camera body, pocket knife, sun screen, bug repellant, ammo and pouches, binoculars plus a water bottle. Rifle of course.

I carry water myself even if it is a small bottle that fits into a pocket, as too many times no water is carried and the 'short' hunt turns into a longer one. Unbelieveable 'Africans' (ie white or black) don't always carry water. In Oz it would be unheard of not to.

A handy thing is a head insect net for lunch time stops.

A tracker or game scout often offers to carry the extra stuff and certainly during the stalk itself. Earns them a better tip at the end of the safari.

On most safaris the "team" finds it unusual if the client carries much at all.

I take a camera bag. In which I keep spare ammo, a digital still and video cameras, extra batteries, tapes and mermory cards, snacks and insect repellent.

As we leave the vehicle, I put a small compact camera in my pocket, a GPS and a handfull of boiled sweets.

I leave the rest in the bag in the truck.

Blair: 6" Duiker: now that's a Duiker! I'm looking at taking Bush & Blue Duiker, Oribi, Vaal Rhebok & Cape Grysbok on this trip. Won't pass up any over grown Steenbok either. Thanks for the best wishes. Good hunting, LDK
PS: did you post your Duiker?

Not to divert from the original question but I am trying to think of an example of a boiled sweet. What is that?

Allen,

The English call them boil sweets - you might know them as hard sweets that come in many flavours.

I pass these around every couple of hours or so when we are far from the trcuk. Or when we shoot an animals and start butchering it.

On a few occasions, I get one of those struggling to keep up with Roy come from behind panting "Saeed, can I have one of them sweeties please?"

The hard candy that is most used here in hot, dusty Oklahoma is called "Jolly Ranchers". Not sure what the name is all about, but they are a very hard, solid candy that comes in many flavors. I took a couple of bags on my last trip and they were well liked by everyone. I also took several packs of chewing gum that was a big hit as well.

I always carry a small bag, whether Africa or on any hunt, ,a fanny pack, "possibilites" bag or whatever you want to call it. In it I always have a bottle of water, multipurpose tool w/knife, small flashlight such as a surefire and extra batteries, moistned towlettes, many uses for them! and a small bottle of bug repellent such as 100% deet. I may add a camera depending on the situation but always the main items stay in the bag and with me.,Hard candies are useful if for no ther reason than having a sweet tooth but they do help keep the mouth moist while on a stalk or hike. Like what was posted earlier, a small excursision can turn into a long one and I want my own water supply and flashlight regardless.
