Thorough cleaning inside and out. Then a rust preventative (can't remember the name) on exterior, chamber and bore.

A good car wax like Maquires for the outside metal.

"Dry" lube like Eezox or Microlon for internals and moving parts.

And for an oil finish stock, a few applications of a good linseed based stock oil. If the rifle gets fairly heavy use, you may want to repeat the stock oiling process at least every couple of months. I'd do that in the dry season as well. The process helps to keep water out of the wood in the wet, and adds oil to the wood in the dry season.

Use one that you don't have to worry about!!!

They all can take quite a bit of the wet stuff, but my experience is that Box-locks fare better.

WR Drop-locks would be the best as the wood-to-metal fit is simple and doesnt lend to warpage..And, you can easily remove the lockparts for drying and re-lubrication.My 02,

Jeff

Car wax on the metal. Prayer for the internals. Not too worried about the wood.

This info might be of interest.
When I first boight my doubles I took my 450/400 3 1/4" British double to Idaho in a spot and stalk bear hunt. It was a spring hunt.

Not only dod it snow on the gun, in fact I shot a bear at about 10 yards in a heavy snow storm, it rained a fair amount.
3 different times I had a 3+ hour walk in heavy rain. And I mean heavy, at times I could not see 20 feet.
I carried the 400 on my shoulder "African" style most of the time.

On the way home to TX I stopped off at Champlins as I wanted to put a leather recoil pad on the gun.

I had JJ take off the stock to clean and oil the action. There was no evidence of any water damage.

Since then I do not worry about it.

However, water will enter the barrels from the chamber end. I even tried the "trick" if using grease on the back of the barrels against the breach face. Water still got in.

I have had the same thing happen on bolt and single shot rifles.

I just dry out the bbl every night.

Ray,

Which Indian reservation? I'm doing a couple of construction projects on the Tohono O’odham which is South of Casa Grande and they had a roping going on there last weekend.

I'm kinda surprised you guys aren't on top of this. I mean for what a DR costs...oh well. Please allow me to assist, and take it for what it's worth: Natural beeswax products for fine furniture for your wood. This should be applied some time prior to your hunt and reside not in your safe (unless necessary) or gun case. You want any scent vapors to dissipate. All metal parts can be wiped (with gun rag used only for this) with Rig spray. Do not spray the gun overall, only any moving parts; wipe down the exterior and avoid overspray on the wood. When storing your DR, insert Rust Inhibitor "cartridges." Not a bad idea to add a few RI wafers inside your safe and gun case. This product works so replace as directed. Each evening when returning to camp during a rainy day, wipe down your gun and dry as much as possible. Remove forearm, and breakdown if possible. Allow the breach to point downward on a towel and drain any water inside. Bring your wax rag and rub your wood when dry. Let the rifle evaporate any moisture (unless your in a lodge type camp and have a hair dryer Smiler Keep the hair dryer air off the wood. Use your Rig rag to do the final wipe down. If your satisfied your rifle is completely dry, reassemble and store in your case inserting the RI cartridges. I don't think you'll ever have any rust problems. Don't mean to sound like a wise ass, but this will prevent rust. PS: store all rags separately in zip lock bags and label, and buy yourself a Bore Snake if you don't have one. Small and easy to pack. Does a fine field cleaning. LDK

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
