Dallas and Reno are over, what did you book?

I'm going to back to Botswana in 2008 for 2 weeks.
10 days in the Okavango Delta for Buffalo and plainsgame.
4 days in the Kalahari near Ghanzi for more plainsgame.

The specific plainsgame to be worked out as we get closer, but I expect go after gemsbuck and zebra in the desert, and impala, lechewe and warthog in the delta.

I booked with Mark Kyriacou big game and bird safaris. This will be my fourth hunt with Mark.

Where are you going?

Going in April with boha to SA to hunt with Tino Erasmus (I might be doing a short hunt with husky before boha arrives). I´ll try my damndest to get a waterbuck this time around and if that works out nyala, hartebeest and bushpig.

Maybe -just this once- I´ll stumble on a big warthog...please God make it bigger than boha´s dancing

I booked a forest hunt starting June 1, 2008 and a savannah hunt starting December 28 2008. Both in Cameroun with Mayo Oldiri. My wife is thrilled to be going, even with the heat, humidity and bugs.
On an related note I talked to USFW at Reno about the elephant and lion import rules. I advise talking to your dog, you will get more info from him.

I leave with Arnold Payne this Saturday for Zim; 12 days hunting PG and touring camps run by Arnold's Impala African Safaris. Then RSA in June for 14 days of waterfowl/upland hunting and PG. If it all comes together I'll be going to RSA in early April to pursue one of several 50-55 inch Cape Kudu I failed to get last July and after a particular Nyala bull that has eluded us. Since October, he's been seen three times at dusk and I've just received a good 35mm pic of him last week. He's what I'm looking for. I wish everyone a safe and successful hunt! D.

Saeed,

Do you have to promise NOT to bring Walter when you book every year?

If not, you must have one of those "memory erasers" like in the movie "Men in Black" that you use on the Vincents every year after the safari is over.

Gentlemen,

Walter read my post, and got quite upset.

Walter "Why are we waiting until October to go hunting?"

Me "Because that is the only time convenient for us"

Walter "US? Who are US? You and the Vincents ha? Why are we not consulted on this?"

Me "Walter, we are going in October, if you would like to come along, you are welcome, if you don't, even better, so shut up and do some work!"

Walter "Roy said I can take my Blaser, can I?"

"No you can't. We are going on a REAL hunt, so we are taking the usual two rifles we always take. When we go to South Africa to hunt on a farm, you can take your Blaser"

"I LOVED hunting in South Africa! It was the best hunt I have EVER had! Peter is so considerate he even gave me a sand bag to use on top of the truck. We hunted until 11, went back to camp to rest. Had a very good lunch - just like in a hotel! Had a small nap, and at 3 o'clock we went to hunt again. That is just the sort of hunt I enjoy. We should go there more often"

"That is not called hunting Walter, it is just SHOOTING. As usual, on a real hunt we hear nothing from you except complaints"

"I am not the only one complaining when we go with Roy and Alan. Everyone complains except you because you and them enjoy being nasty to everyone else"

"So you won't be coming with us this year ha? Horst will be jumping up and down with joy!"

"Of course I am coming! I am not going to let you have all the fun without me. Tell me, who is going to make the BBQ? Ha? Who? And who is going to keep you, Roy and his off spring in check, ha?"

"Just make sure you take all your stuff with you. I hope you won't be "borrowing" everything from everyone else this year"

"Listen, we have been on this hunting thing many years. It is always the same. You take the guns and ammunition, cameras, computers, telephones, knives, sweets, chewing gum and me. That is all you need on a hunt"

"Why have you included yourself in that list of requirements?"

"I am how do you call it "indispensable". You need me like you need your gun and ammo. I keep Horsti in check. If it was not for me he would put snakes and scorpions in everyone's bed. You know how nasty he is. I am going to make my time table for this year trip"

"What time table? I will tell you the day we leave, and the day we come back. Just make sure you have all the things you need with you"

"I have to make a time table. For me, not for you. I know your time table, and I don't like some of it"

"If you don't like my time table then make sure you stay out of it then"

"I don't like waking up so early in the morning. Honestly, I don't know how you can be so cheerful waking up so early. Also you are very noisy, and wake all of us up"

"If you go to bed as early as I do, you will have no problems waking up early. Instead, you stay up all bloody night yep-yapping!"

“I like to remember the day with my room mate. He tells me things I have missed, and I tell him things he has missed. “

“The amount of missing you do, you must need all night to tell him everything!â€

“I don’t mean missing with a RIFLE! I mean missing things as in what happened during the day and so on. Anyway, you miss too. I saw how you miss the hyaenaâ€

“I did not miss the hyaena. It died within five yards of being shotâ€

“No no no. You MISSED its head. You did not hit in the HEAD, as you said you were aiming for. So anywhere else is a missâ€

“Walter, the hyaena was shot straight through the heart.â€
“That makes no difference. You MISSED the head, as you said you were going to shoot it in the headâ€

“You were not with us in the blind, so how the hell do you know what I said?â€
“Listen, I have known you for so many years. Each time you hit something in the wrong place, you say that is where you have aimed! I remember Roy complaining about you every time you shoot anything. Now he has given up, he does not complain any more. But I haven’t! I will always tell you when you do something wrongâ€

“OK! OK! Go back to your time table. I see that having a discussion with you is pointless!â€

“My time table is very easy. Here, I will read it to you:
Fly to Dar at 10 o’clock on Tuesday.
Find a seat that works, and has working entertainment bits.
Do not annoy the pilot – just as you have ordered!
Keep my mouth shut when we arrive in Dar.
No making fun of customs and immigration people.
No making fun of you at the airport
Fly to camp
Choose closest tent to dining room
Sleep early to wake up early
First hunting day, and all the trouble starts.
Buffalo. Buffalo. Buffalo. I get fed up and stay in camp.
Everyone wants a BBQ.
We cannot BBQ a buffalo.
I have to go shoot an impala.
I cook the impala
Everyone is happy again for one evening.â€

“OK! OK! That is enough thank you. I know where that is leading now. We have all heard it before. You can fine tune your time table with Roy and Alan when they come in May. For now, can you finish adjusting trigger?â€

“Alright. But where is my cake and ice cream? Call your wife and tell her she is sleeping on the job again. I need some working fuelâ€

To Tim who booked with Big Five in Cherowe North. I've hunted with them in the past. Great camp and great outfit. Well organized. Took nice buffalo. (It took 8 rounds before it surrendered!) Elephant, croc and hippo plentiful. We found area to be thin on plains game but did see some good waterbuck. Shot the only kudu we saw, but it was just short of 58, so we were extremely pleased. Saw a MONSTER bushbuck but it was on the Zambia side of the river. Take some time to fish. Tiger fishing is great down river. Ian, Andy, Mitch and the rest of the crew are great!

Tim and I hunted there in '04, and Tim hunted once more in '02, so we're pretty familiar with the area, and my asessment of the game is the same as yours. Tim has taken a couple nice Kudu there as well as a very nice Eland. I was not able to find a shootable Kudu last time, but I'm hoping to pick one up this time around.

We also did some Tigerfishing out of the fish camp as well. I was told that all the hunting will now be done out of the fish camp, as the concession owner has decided to take the hunting camp and redo it for his personal use. He is also taking 25% of quota for his use as well.
