Not sure if this is the right forum, but I have Giraffe bones and need to get them carved. Does anyone know who can do this in the US? They were suppose to be carved in Zimbabwe but to my surprise they were not.

Thanks,

Robert

Hi Robert, you might try contacting some of the custom knife makers around the country. Some of them probably know a few carvers. Bone is not fun to carve. It is generally done with a Dremel tool and smells like a Dentist drilling your teeth. The dust is very toxic to human lungs. Good luck, and let us know if you find someone. LDK

That stuff stinks horribly. I made several knives from a bone that I brought back. Never again.

I hope the dust isn't too toxic Frowner

I have some salt and pepper shakers, and they do not stink. They were made in Zimbabwe - gave a set to my in-laws - if those stink - Okay! Big Grin but I haven't smelled the ones I gave to my parents stinking.

You might try Bill Middlebrook in Haskell, Texas. He has been making custom knives for over 40 years. He may know someone. He uses a lot of african bone and antler. Here is one he made for me using giraffe bone.

Try Carlton Evans knives. He uses Giraffe bone for many of his custom knives. He could most likely put you in touch with some carvers as well.

They don't stink until you start grinding them to shape. The fat in the bone, combined with the heat of the grinder, and man-o-man you had better hope your wife isn't home.

Yes and I hear that Bwanna's dad uses that damn salt shaker all of the time as evidenced by the "snow' found on the plate of whatever he is eating at the time.
