I would go with the 470 and 375. I was there last July and the buff lay up in some thick stuff. I took a 450 NE double and a scoped 375 and it was just about perfect. The double was very comforting while sneaking through the thickets. Best of luck.

Your first option is the best by a county mile. Another good and maybe an even better option would be the 470 & the 300.

The time you're going is good but what area?

375 and 470, if something happen to your 470 you can still take a buff with your 375.

I hunted Luke Samaras's Masailand concession in late 2005. I used a 458 Lott for buffalo and a 30-06 for plains game. Both worked very well.

GDF,
I hunted Lolkisale in November of 2003 so it has been a few years back but my vote goes to the double and .375. Actually, I took one rifle, a custom Brno .375 and had no problem taking my buffalo and plainsgame with it. My longest shot was at my Grant's gazelle approximately 125 meters out on the plains around Lobo. Cokes Hartebeest and Zebra were both in the 75 to 80 meter range. Impala was no more than 50 meters. Of course, the buff was even closer, probably 35 meters. So the double will work well for buff if you take your time to work in close. A scoped .375 will do the trick on either buff or plainsgame. It did for me!

I remember your picture with Nigel and that Model 70 in Safari Magazine with your "Ninja Bull".

If I were hunting buff in that area...I might want to be carrying the .470 double...those buff there are known to be a bit cheeky. The .375 could be taken along with a tracker in case a longer shot was presented. And of course...the .375 will do nicely for the plains game as well.

Hello G D F,

What dates are you hunting Lokisale? I just finalized scheduling a hunt in Lokisale for Dec. 1-10, 2010.

I plan of taking a 404 Jeffery and a 375 H&H. My preference is taking two rifles that can handle DG. The 375 would be capable of handling PG and DG, so I would tend to leave the 300 at home.

I hunted Samaras' area in October 1997. They were calling them "Ninja Bulls" then also. Luke's son was to be my PH but he was in a Kenya hospital recovering from a buff toss. Shots were VERY close---perfect for a big double.

Take two DG rifles, example 375 $ 470 you still have enough firepower in the 375 to get the job done.

G D F,

Of the choices you provided I think the 470 double plus the 375 would be my choice. A scoped 375 would serve as a legal back up for the 470 and handle the longer shots on the plains game.

Can't answer about Lokisale. I hunted Samaras's area with very thick thorn and low visibiity, and yes, they don't call them ninjas for nothing.

I hunted a .375. Only took one rifle because I took my friend's pair as well. He hunted a .458 Win and a .375. If I had had a .470 in there, I would have been much more comfortable. But that is the thick stuff in Kitiangare.

I bought a .458 Win to take back, which is essentially the equlvalent of a .470, but the trip's been cancelled. I would have taken the .458 and the .375. 300 yard shots are very possible with a .375, if you need to make one, and you have a backup DG rifle.

I took my three Masailand buff at distances between 50 - 80 yards. I used a 458 Lott that was scoped. Not disappointed I left my double at home.

Your PG rifle would best be the 375H&H in this area.

I did a 21-day hunt in Masailand (hunted both Lolkisale and Lobo) in Nov/Dec of 2007. I took a 416 Rigby and 300mag. I left the 470NE at home. All the buffalo were taken at <100 yards. There were some longer shots required for the Grants, Zebra and Oryx. The longest shot was on the Oryx at 350 yards.

Another option not discussed at all above: 375 and 416. Both very versatile in case Murphy decides to make an appearance.

I have taken 4 buffalo in Samaras' concession at distances between 25 and 90 yards, all with my scoped Model 70 in .375 H & H. Even though the shots were short, the scope was very helpful on a couple of occasions in threading shots through the incredibly thick cover. I also prefer not to worry with more than one gun (in the past I always seemed to have the wrong gun in my hands when a quick shot presented itself) and on my last trip, I shot everything from a Thomson's gazelle to my elephant with the same rifle.

All that being said, having a big double would make those walks in the really thick stuff a bit less stressful.

Best of luck on your hunt.

I'd cut down the baggage weight by just taking the 416. Good for shots out to 300 yds, plenty of power for the buffalo.

The last time I shot a buff it was with a .404 loaded to .416 ballistics. If the buff is calm, fine. But if he's pissed you too may have a run-in with a zombie buff. Take the .470 and the .375. I won't ever go back to Africa without a .375, even for pinpoint shots on croc. My rifle is that accurate. Most in that caliber are.

I am going there in Dec 2011 and will probably take a .416 and a .338, the combo I find myself using every time I go to Africa.

The best field shot I have hunted with is Wendell and he shot a buff with a double and hit the damn thing in the head. It was about 100 yards away. I have no love affair with a double. If you want to use one, great. Your hunt. Don't try and convince me.

The only issue is the .338 as a backup. If my .416 was to become disabled, then I would shoot the buff with a .338, pay the TFs with traveler's checks, then report them stolen, since I would be terrified of having committed a violation of the Lacey Act.

Thancks gentlemen for wish and interesting information.
Buffalo hunt with two bulls by only 375 no for me.
My small buffalo experience include 4 bulls by 416 and one by 375.I saw very very marked difference. But 375 for 21 -day when I took both cats, hippo, croc and eland was great.

A .375 will get the job done, if you can place your shots precisely, which is just practice and more practice. I've done two buff hunts with the one rifle and it works well for PG, too. Works well, period. I have complete faith in mine and will hopefully hunt it again. I would like to try some of these Woodleigh 350 grn. PRP's at 2350 on buff.

Got a phone call today and it looks like we may just be going back, so next trip will be the .458 Win and the .375. Scope the .375 with a 1.75-6 and the .458 with a 1.5-5. Should work.

As long as you are taking either the 375 or the 416 it doesn't matter what other rifle you take.
