I headed down to the Boise airport this morning to the small Customs and Border Patrol office. As always, the gentleman was polite and efficient and happily signed off my 4457. No request for other documents, but that may be a benefit of living in the Free State of Idaho. They usually just want to know where you are going, what you are hunting, and what the meat is like!

I stumbled across a 4457 form on the internet with a 08/31/2021 expiration date:
https://files.fm/u/ahb9p7t2

I don't know if this is a temporary fix by Customs or the work of some bright young lass with Photoshop, but I suspect it will make SAPS happy, and Customs doesn't theoretically care about the "expiration date". Good luck.

I used to simply cut off the dates on the form to avoid the conversation but now they look for a date. I expect the form has been modified - I actually thought about doing the same thing myself but decided to follow the rules :-)

or you can simply avoid RSA. That has worked for me.

Already I was beginning to fall into the African way of thinking: That if
you properly respect what you are after, and shoot it cleanly and on
the animal's terrain, if you imprison in your mind all the wonder of the
day from sky to smell to breeze to flowers—then you have not merely
killed an animal. You have lent immortality to a beast you have killed
because you loved him and wanted him forever so that you could always
recapture the day - Robert Ruark

England,
Did you use the form above? And if so...did CBP sign it without question?

Indeed they did. I'm flying into Bulawayo, Zim in late September but have to connect through JNB. Patrick at Travel With Guns suggested getting a "new" 4457 due to the "expiration date" issue. If CBP is happy, surely SAPS will be happy?

Has anybody seen a new or updated 4457 form in the Customs office as of late and what the date on it might be?

The 4457 is nothing more than a lifetime receipt for your items, be they guns, cameras, binocs, range finder, diamonds or whatever of value..that show you owned them prior to leaving the USA, and upon return otherwise you might have to pay an import tax..

That's it, all the rest is pure BS, read the law or have a US atty read it for you..Most custom Agents know this, its required..
