Anyone hear the rumor of a 58" Kudu bull that was shot in the Kalahari region last month? I saw this on another forum and wanted to see if anyone here might know something about this? "We band of 45-70'ers" | ||

I shot one in the Kalahari in Botswana in March of this year that was just shy of 58". Something like 1/8 or 2/8 off. For all practical purposes, close enough to 58" for me!  | |||

I heard that it was a 58" Gemsbok. Remember hearing that it was reported to beat the old RW world record by over 10". | |||

Terry, Yes that was with Clive. Yes, he does have good Kudu! I passed on a ton of his Kudu, 100% prepared to go home without one. I was not shooting one that was not "The One". On the last day ... we saw "The One". I could have easily gone home without one. We just happened to find this one. Clive and a client did shoot the new RW #1 Gemsbuck. I saw a picture of it, it was incredible. It was 46" Bull will 11" bases! M70Nut. I don't know what RW #1 is on Kudu, but I would bet it was in the high 60's or maybe even in the 70's. | |||

My PH last year (Jochen Hein of Okatjuru Safaris) has a 62" kudu on his dining room wall. His camp manager keeps telling him to take it down because it gives clients unrealistic expectations. | |||

58" Kudu are still doable, 60 plus inch Kudu are the holy grail..Most safari companies shoot a couple of 58" Kudu every year I suspect. I have had clients shoot some big Kudu in Zimbabwe some years back, the largest being 67 inches as I recall, that was in the Chinoyi area south of Doma...I think the meat market and land seizures may have about wiped out those great Kudu and Sable in that area. I shot an almost 59 inch Kudu there and its on my web page gallery, along with a 44 inch sable taken on a 7 day hunt. Every year we shoot some 56 to 58 Kudu North of Gravelott with Hannes Swanepoel and he gets a 60 incher now and then. Those outfitters in that area seem to shoot a lot of big Kudu every year. I'm guessing but I would say they kill 3 or 4 every year that go 60 in that area. I think every farmhouse in RSA has a huge Kudu on its wall, or so it seems. A 72 inch plus Kudu was found in Mozambique some years ago. It was a Lion Kill. I have picturs of that bull someplaces around here, The picture was in Man Magnum magazine as I recall... Now a 58 inch Gemsbok is a whole nuther story, that would be something to behold. The largest Gemsbok I ever saw was 45 plus inches, almost 46, but I know there have been bigger ones killed, but nothing near 58 inches I don't think. The rumored 58" gemsbuck that was talked up on the Campfire has shrunk to 38" now. It turned out to be nothing but a mis-communication. | |||

Just for you Vapo....    He has been measured several times with numbers as high as 63" but I call him 61 3/4 on the long side horn and 59 3/4 on the short one. He's at the tannery, won't be soon enough for him to get here. I will have him done as a pedestal mount, low ceilings here. I think the longer kudu have a narrower spread and tighter curls like this one. The Limpopo Valley seems to produce good ones. ~Ann | |||

I think Kudu expectations seem to grow. I believe most hunters would be thrilled with anything beyond 54. Mike Legistine actu? Quid scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.  What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances. | |||

I was hunting in the Turk Mine area of Zimbabwe and a Canadian in the camp came in with a LARGE Kudu. He had already shot a trophy but the PH had to talk him into shooting this one. It was 59"+ (we didn't have an official cable and tape to measure it, the outfitter has since become SCI certified) and he was not too happy about being talked into shooting it. I have only dreamed about shooting something that big. The biggest I personally have shot is 55" and it had huge bases. It was also shot in the Turk Mine area. I think I have shot around 25 Kudu and there are a lot of 50"+ in Zimbabwe but I'd give almost anything to just SEE one like Ann's much less SHOOT one. To me they are the animal that truly epitomizes AFRICA, I even have one on my business card I like them so much. To me a trip is not complete if I haven't taken a Kudu. Don't remember the year but the man is a big Houndsman and has hunted hounds all over and into central america for Jaguar. I lost my notebook with all the notes from 2 years of hunting ,names ,addresses etc. Had his email but when I went from WebTV to a laptop I lost all that data also. I just hunted with him the one trip but really liked him very much and sorry I lost contact with him. He worked full time at a mine and was a sheep guide I believe. 2 weeks ago in S.A. I saw mounted on two different farms a 68" and one just under 74". My PH thought that the bigger one would be the world record but the gentleman that killed it had no interest in the books. He told me that between he and his son they had killed 420 kuda. The 68" was 4th in Rowland Ward when he shot it. I also saw a 52" sable at the place with the 73. It was incredible seeing something like those. I killed a 56" on the same farm where I saw the 68" mount. I also got a 52" earlier in the trip. I was very pleased with both of mine, but WOW those huge ones were neat to see. | |||

Bwanna. I will be able to get mine up eventually asw all I have is a video that my PH did. My camara was stolen in Zeerust of course I had all of the memory sticks in the case. I fell for an old trick. 1 got my attention and the other reached in the window and grabbed my csmara. To say I was pissed is an understatement. Pieter and I drove around and looked for them but it was a waste of time. The gentleman who had the bigger one had the most unbelieveable trophy room. As soon as I can figure out how to get pics off the disk I will post some pics. and my report. | |||

zimbabwe, Bringing my contributions to this thread back to the topic (ie. Hijack Off)..... Here's a pic of Tim's kudu, which was just shy of 60".  Its shape is very similar to Ann's. Too bad the picture isn't as good...its a scan of a photo and lots of shadow on his face, etc.... Not sure Jorge, my 'artist' is finishing my very cool black bear from Idaho right now and beginning my Zim leopard, also taken in 2005. I know I am not his only client, in good time I suppose! I have not rushed my mounts due to a long move and a new job just a year ago, that also slowed the process significantly. Chris, that looks like my kudu's brother, very nice horns on him!
