Looking at getting a phone, have heard from Explorer Satellite that immersat might be best bet for southern africa. Anyone made this decision?

I have both. In Southern Africa, the Inmarsat has worked best for me. I did not use it in East Africa. However, I have received a number of calls from someone using one in TZ. The quality was outstanding.

Tim has a point. My Inmarsat is useless above the Arctic Circle. The Iridium is great.

Andy sold Nigel Theisen and I on Inmarsat. We bought 2...one to replace Nigel's old Iridium in Africa and one for me to travel with. So far...so good! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. Thanks guys - sounds like Immarsat is way to go. I don't want to go to the poles, so that is good news :-)
