I just got back from a hunt in Zim.

Early on in the hunt, we were driving and smelled a pretty foul smell. Upon investigation, we found a dead buffalo that had apparently fallen in a washout and dies there.

Does anyone have an idea of why I am getting 2 of every picture?

Musta broke a leg or two in the fall. It doesn't look like anything it couldn't have climbed out of.

No. But I once found a cow elk and her calf in a similiar fix in a washout on a ranch in New Mexico. Both dead for several days. Very sad sight.

I saw a picture just a week or so ago of a deer dying the same way, falling into a crack in the ground.

Damned tough way for a great old bull to die.

Looks like the old guy couldn't get out of the hole. It appears to me that the edges of the hole have been worn smooth with his attempts to get out.

You would think he would have avoided the hole in the first place.

There was recently circulated a photo of a bull elk in the Missouri Breaks, MT, that died in the same manner. His rack prevented his front feet from touching. Have also seen a photo of another bull elk that fell into a crack in some boulders and suffered the same fate.

The interesting thing to me when we found him was that nothing had fed on him at all. There were no vultures around either.

Buff are not so different from their cousins, the domestic cattle. I've seen domestic cattle feeding and walking, and ultimamtely getting their head below a limb, fence, or similar obstruction. Once the head is under the obstruction, the cow / bull lacks the reasoning to lower its head and back out. Instead, unable to raise its head, the animal is completely stuck and will stay there until it is released by man or it dies.

I figure this bull had the physical strength to escape, but he lacked the ability to think his way out.

Would've been a great trophy! Too bad, but Mother Nature has her ways too.

Too deep a hole and the bottle-neck at both ends prevented it from exiting.
Quite likely to have been a source of water which drew the thirsty bull to its downfall.
