I am trying to book in '08 thru Atcheson for Buffalo, Sable, Hippo and other species, and we have discussed a couple of options.

The first is Roger Whittal Safaris, hunting the Zambezi Valley, and the other is an as yet un-named outfit in Zambia, in the Luangwa Valley.

I would like to hear from any who know the areas as relates to the game listed, and any pros/cons of the areas or Whittal( the other outfit soon to follow).

Will probably be looking at end of July/ first part of August 08. This will be my second safari. Thanks in advance to those who help!

I'm heading over to Zim in four weeks and will be covering a large area. I will be with Impala African Safaris (Arnold Payne/Ron Sparrow). I will be glad to send you a report when I return or give you their contact info. Good hunting, David

If sable is a priority, nix the Luangwa valley. They are not there. You could do a great buffalo, hippo, croc hunt and go to a ranch ($) or other area for the sable.

This combo has Mozambique written all over it. Contact me if you want to explore that option. Plenty buffalo, good sable, and no shortage of hippo. We can do Zim too for you too, so I am not biased.

If you have lots of spare cash go to Zambia. Its a very wild and exciting place. To get sable there you have to go up around Mulobezi which has the largest sable in africa.

I will be going to Zim in early May this year for Buff, Sable, and misc. plainsgame with Charlton McCallum safaris. Trophy quality and "value" seem to be good.

Gunny is right. If you really want sable and buff, you would probably have better luck in Mulobaesi or Mumbwa east and west. Mumbwa will give you better buff opportunity than Mulobaesi.
Sable great in all these areas.

You will have to hunt with Swan/Scan. They are great but very pricey. I hunted with them in 2005 and had great results.

I am also trying to set up a sable and Leopard hunt. I would choose Mulobaesi because it is rated the best for sable.

Price may get me to look at Zim.

Good Luck

You will have a great hunt with Roger Whittall Safaris. I have hunted with RWS twice and both hunts were fantastic. Chewore South is RWS's Zambezi Valley concession and it is crawling with buff. Good bushbuck, impala, zebra too.

Other plains game is more scarce, but by no means absent. One one hunt we gave a half hearted effort for a sable but between trying for a leopard and a short try for a lion and mostly going for elephant some things had to give and the sable effort was one. It is possible but they are not around every bend by any means.

Feel free to PM me if you want more details. I book through Keith Atcheson for RWS and you can get my phone # from Keith - make sure you get my new office number - if you want to speak directly. BTW, everything Keith has told me has been right and his advice has been excellent - great choice for an agent.

I have PM'd a couple of y'all.

After looking over some Zambian prices, I think Zim better fits my means, but I am still doing some checking. Thanks so far for all the input- that's one great thing about this resource, nowhere else can you get firsthand advice about so many areas and outfits.

Its to bad Zambia has gotten so expensive. When I went there in 2000 a buffalo hunt was the same price as Zim. Sable however has always been very expensive there in the safari areas because you had to book fourteen days and pay a 5000 gma fee.

I have personally hunted with Roger Whittal twice. I have recommended the services of his company to many people, all of whom also had great hunts.

Where would you be hunting? I have hunted Chewore and Humani with him. There are good buffalo available in both areas. The hunts are thick brush, close range stalking. Very exciting.

He has good sable. The ones I have seen in Chewore did not look as big on average as those elsewhere in Zim, but I'm happy with mine.
I think the ones on Humani originally came from Matetsi area stock, which tend to be excellent trophies.

Aggie, I would focus on Zim. With all the rain Zim's had this summer, there should be a bumper crop of youngters for the future and plenty of forage for the game to stay healthy. I'm going to a number of places (not just one camp) in two weeks and I'll have plenty to report I'm sure. Although your not going until next year, book your flight about 10 months before you go to get the best deal. By booking in advance you could save enough to take an extra trophy. Zim has excellent trophies, some areas better than others so check around. Prices will vary too as I'm sure your finding out. Good hunting, D.

By the way, I did forget to mention the wide range and great quality of Roger's other plains game.

His Limpopo bushbuck is second to none (check the book). We took a 16" and a 17 7/8" on Humani. Getting a 55"+ kudu with Roger just takes some patience. On my first trip, there was a 62 1/2" and two 58" taken.
He also has nyala on Humani (which is not common in Zim and non-existant in Zambia).
