When I made my two week trip to SA in May I was initially focused on bird hunting with the hope of also taking a bushbuck. I quickly lost my bird hunting focus and started hunting the wonderful plains game animals in the Northern Cape area. After 10 days of hard hunting and six big animals, we moved the hunt to Eastern Cape where I was hoping to take my bushbuck. We hunted hard for three and a half days, daylight to mid-morning and then from late afternoon to dark. We saw a good number of nyala on one piece of hunting area and I shot a nice nyala. My concern is I did not see a single bushbuck. I've read someplace that nyala and bushbuck aren't typically found in good numbers together, one species will predominate in numbers in any given area. I plan to return to Eastern Cape in a few months and would appreciate input, experiences and suggestions about bushbuck hunting.

Maybe someone knows better, but I don't think there is a problem with them coexisting. There are plenty of both nyala and bushbuck along the Turgwe and Save rivers, for example. Maybe it has something to do with the area, maybe there is something missing that bushbuck like/need just in that particular area....Maybe there is plenty of whatever that may be over the hills, at this time of the year, and the bushbuck will be back in due course...Just guesswork, of course

Upton, I do not think that nyala are indigenous to the Eastern Cape but more towards the Natal area of South Africa. I can tell you this that on the farm that I hunt bushbuck, I have seen many nyala and all appears to be well. Blue Duiker are also plentiful. The areas to focus on are the coastal regions of the EC. Hope this is of help.
Happy Hunting!

Check out Save Safaris in Zimbabwe. Mike Payne and Leon du Plessis own the company and hunt on the Save Conservancy - Private land - no game scout, no tsetse files. In June I passed on an 18" bushbuck there and am still regretting it. I also saw some pretty spectacular nyala and sable while I was there.

I saw penty of bushbuck while hunting the EC with Andrew Renton, Kei River Safaris, just not the right one. Both of my hunting partners took very nice bushbuck while there. I'd recommend giving Andrew a call and seeing what he has to offer.

Good Luck!

The area where I saw tons of bushbuck was along the Limpopo River in the Limpopo Region. The farm, I mean an actual farm not a game farm, was right on the Limpopo River accross from Botswana. There was no game fence and the bushbuck just poured over from Botswana. Me and my two hunting buddies all took nice bushbuck that day. The Limpopo River looked more like a creek with some big pools here and there rather than a river but still had to keep an eye for crocs.

Good Hunting,

I remember hunting Bishopstone in Zim a couple of years ago (just over the border and not far from Beitbridge) and seeing groups of trophy bushbuck in the early evening feeding. I had already taken two Limpopo trophy bushbuck on other hunts and so it was fun just sitting and watching them. For a first time bushbuck hunter set on getting a nice bushbuck that would be one of the places that I would consider. I have also hunted bushbuck along the Limpopo in S.A. across from the Botswana border and shot bushbuck there as well. They move back and forth across the almost dry Limpopo River riverbed as pointed out by David Culpepper and with the thick bush along the river, it's a great place to hunt them as well. Big Grin

Bushbuck seem to be rather plentiful throughout most of Zimbabwe. While I have only shot 2 I have seen many, probably the most were near Halfway House along the Gwayi river. In the dusk they seemed as plentiful as rabbits. The ones I have killed were near Chinhoyi and near the Doma Safari Area. In 8 trips to Zimbabwe I have only seen Nyala in a fenced area where they were being introduced. I really wanted a Nyala as I think the spiral horned antelope are just so representative of Africa. As much as I would like to hunt Elephant and Lion I really think Kudu are my favorite game animal in all of Africa.

In the Eastern Cape you will find Bushbuck (cape & limpopo species) and Nyala together. In Natal, not so much in their natural range. Bushbuck's love riverine near green fields. In areas where water is confined to small seeps or springs, they tend to live in very steep ridges. Nyala are adaptable to many terrains, but like the Bushbuck, like dense cover, mainly coming out in open areas to feed at dusk. Hunt Bushbuck early morning and late afternoon. Hunt Nyala late afternoon as a general guide.

Upton,
I hunted KZN with Dubula Yedwa safaris in 2010 and had a great time. We took really nice bushbuck and nyala. Both made RW, so I was very fortunate. The other bushbuck are from Zim and Limpopo province. Yes I am hooked on the bushbuck as well. If you would like further information on the hunt in KZN and contact details please PM me.
