I am no expert on snakes, especially African versions.

What is it?

A green mamba is verdant green.

A black mamba is named that because of the inside of his mouth.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.

I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

From wikipedia:

quote:
The adult snake's length typically ranges from 2 meters (6.6 ft) to 3 meters (9.8 ft), although larger examples have been recorded. It is also the fastest moving snake in Africa, and one of the fastest moving snakes in the world, capable of moving at 11 km/h (6.8 mph) over short distances.

That one looks like it will go 12 feet at least. It probably is a record.

What amazes me is that everyone who eats something's unusual, they say it tastes like chicken??

We fill sand bags from the back of our yard to put in our shooting tunnel and bullet stop.

One day I had one of the boys take some targets to stick at the end, suddenly I could hear him scream, and come back running!!?

"SNAKE" he was shouting!!?

I took a 22 pistol, and went into the tunnel.

Sure enough, there was an adder curled against the wall.

I shot it, and got it out.

The only way we could think of how it got there is that it was in the sand as it was bagged, and somehow managed to escape being shot and came out as the bags got holes in them.

Another time Walter found one lying outside our kitchen door.

And Walter being Walter, he wanted to play with it, and it the snake would not have any of it.

He kept jumping at him, and Walter was getting closer and closer.

Again, and 22 pistol came to the rescue, which did not please Walter at all rotflmo

That's just nasty...

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
- Rudyard Kipling

Life grows grim without senseless indulgence.

Yes it is a black mamba and I surprised in the bathroom early morning but fortunately for me it was cold and the thing was not active. The bloody thing is nearly as thick as my wrist and you would not last long from a full bite from this snake.

fairgame, was that a conservationist decision? You could have shared your bathroom with a deadly snake if you had just made friends with him. Maybe you could have sacked him up and sent him over to a photographic camp. I'm sure they would have been much more understanding of his proclivities.

That sort of creature is enough to give me nightmares.
New Zealand often gets called "Gods Own Country", and while there are many things we do enjoy here particularly our freedom in land access and hunting, God certainly made our country his own by making sure it did not have any snakes.
He just gave our share to our Aussie cousins next door Big Grin

We do as well. Watched a Black Mamba while hunting with Buzz that was quite a bit bigger and thicker than the one pictured. It climbed a tree and entered a whole in the trunk much to the chagrin of the squirrels that were chattering away.

I have a deal with snakes. Not sure they fully comprehend it and there is nothing in writing. But, the basics of the "agreement" is we leave each other alone and don't hurt each other." Same deal I have with sharks. Except for blacktips, they are delicious.
