When a lion safari goes wrong

Eight British tourists are suing a local wildlife reserve near Montagu for R7.3 million after sustaining multiple injuries when the vehicle they were travelling in on a game drive overturned, allegedly during their haste to escape a pride of wild lions.

According to court papers, the tourists went on the game drive on March 14, 2007 in a vehicle driven by Sabona Wildlife Reserve employee, Natasha van der Merwe.

They allege that Van der Merwe drove too close to the lions and that the animals started approaching the vehicle, which had open sides.

This, they say, prompted Van der Merwe to "hastily" reverse the vehicle against a steep incline, causing it to overturn.

After they were flung from the vehicle, the lions started to approach them. The tourists claim that Van der Merwe did not call for assistance immediately and that they were further traumatised by prolonged exposure to the lions.

This breaking news flash was supplied exclusively to iol.co.za by the news desk at our sister title, the Cape Argus.

"Traumatized by prolonged exposure to lions"

Seems that was what they were after when they went lion watching. I would think that 'prolonged exposure" would mean someone got eaten.

It would have made a great video for one of the TV reality shows.

I have heard that lions do not like the taste of stupid people, and this story proves it.

Prolonged exposure to lions - is there a 'lion screen' like 'sunscreen' to prevent this ??
Typical eco-tourist reaction like being horrified when a lion eats a buffalo ! nilly

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......
