This Delta Force chap is currently punching big holes into the hearts of ISIS or whatever they call themselves these days.

Hard men such as these allow us to sleep better at night.

I doubt he seeks the self agrandizement of "legend" status.

If he he returns to you Bwana Baldry please allow me the courtesy of picking up a trophy fee or two for him.

Hi Charl,

Your post on the other forum simply reminded me of a man that I also hunted along side and for some time we were friends but I suspect due to his work he broke contact. He did not speak much and spoke very little of what he did. I was informed later that amongst other unbelievable feats he secured the first Black Hawk that went down in Somalia and is now hunting seriously bad people in a hot and distant sandy places.

You put Mr Boddington on a pedestal and you admire the man. Good on you Charl and personally I think he has done much good for hunting.

However I just could could not resist using the title of your thread to remind us all that there are hunters out there who are truly great men and who will probably never be recognised for their unselfish achievements.

These be legends.

Right you are.

I see one of these guys almost every day of my life. He never says a word about his past activities to anyone.

We were at a function last month. Some one asked what he had done in the military thinking he was just another enlisted man. His answer was, "lots of things." Never a hint of what he had done in the past.

USSF have joined with British SAS to form a specific hunter/killer unit to take on ISIL.

Its Interesting that they be combining now for that unit,
since the idea of Delta-Force came from an American SF officer who was an Xchange officer that served with the British SAS,
then later convincing the US gov. that the US needs similar.

so much so, that DF style themselves on many aspects derived from the SAS, even down to using their methods in selection process.
which should really help with DF/SAS assimilating as one cohesive & functional unit.

When prez. Bush was faced with the prospect of the imminent execution of CIA operatives in the M.E.
the US gov. due to DF limited experience in such high risk hostage retrievals, employed the services of the experienced SAS
to retrieve and save them, which just goes to show that DF have chosen the right model to form themselves on... tu2

He may choose to be pissed. I guess it depends on what your definition of a legend is. I still say well played bringing this to our attention. My original offer stands.

No his name is John.

His mate told me that John was one of the few that took a full pack of gear during the op in Mogadishu. I think he was the only chap to have night vision and GPS and when dark came he directed fire for the rest of his team. He had to get choppers in at night to drop ammo and new rifles as the barrels got red hot. That team were up against a couple of thousand armed individuals and having put most of them on the ground moved onto the second crash site where they got isolated and out numbered.

Like I say a quiet guy and unassuming but liked a good fight.

Ok cool Kyle was at the 93 Mogadishu cluster as well but is currently retired from the military. Great guy as well and very into hunting. And of course has a award winning show with the other "legend". It is interesting that i personally know both of them and can call them friends. Kyle owns a training company called Viking tactics which provides top level firearms training.

In the US they are quickly forgotten when their service ends. Not to mention underpaid.

Not sure why you guys think a guy who was deployed multiple times in 33 years, including Africa, to fight bad guys is not a hero too? The fact he is a "celebrity" probably has a lot to do with the "hits". If everyone is so hung up on the fact his superior officers frocked him incorrectly while he was on the General promotion list so be it. Sorry but I personally think Marines are on the "badass" list, no matter what you think of them as an individual. His business and personal life after he retired is another matter entirely. Maybe I'm biased because my brother graduated from the Naval Academy and is currently a Marine.

Actually, Trax is quite accurate up until his last statement, of which I have no knowledge. The US officer was Charles Beckwith. Beckwith struggled to get SFOD-D off the ground but in the end he was successful. Delta Force did use the SAS selection process, which involved a two week land nav course, carrying a 55 lb ruck and a map and compass. On each leg applicants had no idea of the minimum time required; they simply had to bust their asses. When they got to each point they were given another one, again without knowledge of the time required. After two weeks of little sleep and food, they were then given a psychological exam.

The movie "Final Option" is a pretty accurate portrayal of the techniques the SAS used; in the final scene SAS operators are doing the repelling from helicpoters.

My 1SG when I was a CO came from DF; I asked him what the longest leg of the land nav course was. He said, "The last one. It was 72 kilometers."

I asked him how long it took him. Nearly 30 years later I still remember his answer: 12 hours and 21 minutes. Remember, this is moving through the woods with a 55 lb ruck doing land nav with a map and compass.

He was taken hostage in Beruit in the early 80s but escaped after ten days.

As I have said before, the most impressive soldier I ever served with. I used to do the Army 2 mile run test in 12 flat and he would kick my ass. He was really good with explosives too.

I would think because his legend status has nothing to do with his military service. It is entirely him from being a hunting celebrity.
