SaeedFor Those Who Use A GPS Sports Watch
Ladies and gentlemen,
I was trying several of these GPS watches, from Garmin and Suunto.
They are very good, but just found out a terrible problem with the Garmin watches.
On the Suunto, you can pause the GPS when you stop, or get in the truck, for as long as you wish.
The Garmins you can only pause them for a maximum of 30 minutes.
This is awful, and I know I will stick to Suunto, which I have been using for a number of years on safari.

Greg BrownleeSuunto watches are the way to go. Use it on most of my hunts. Also works very well in Asia.

NavalukI have been using a Suunto Traverse Alpha for several years. I definitely recommend you look at this watch to see if it fits your needs.

TexKDHa. I just put this over in the backpack side as I was looking too.
I looked at the Garmins just because I thought they were better. I have bought several Suuntos and every one of them died for some reason. The buttons got stuck or it just went berserk and went blank.
Which Suuntos would you recommend if you weren't using it in GPS mode? In other words for time, altitude and temperature. And maybe with a strong alarm clock in it too?
The GPS mode eats power and needs a recharge every day from what I see of them. Fine in Texas and Africa where you are in every night. But not so good in the boonies where there is no electric power for a week.
On another note I saw the new ones have lots of functions. Like music. Really? I can se my hunt report now. There I was with Mr Big filling up my scope . . and then my music watch decided to come on.

How long does the battery last without the GPS ? Thank you Saeed.
I might just order the Ambit even as you can still get it if you order it customized.

SaeedI do not use it without a GPS.
And in Africa I plug it to charge when we stop for lunch.
I think with GPS it lets about 12-15 hours.
Without might be twice that.
They have a new one out SUUNTO 9, which is supposed to have longer battery time.

TexKDThank you Saeed. I am going to check them out.

Saeed / others
What are you actually using it for - route track back and distances covered ?
How many of the other features are you really using.
Serious questions from someone who doesn't have one and may be missing out on something.
Cheers
.

SaeedBasically I use mine for distance travelled.
Nothing else.

TexKDThat might be good too and I can see why the GPS is on.
I may need to know what altitude us Flatlanders that live by the seacoast get to before I start sucking wind.

SaeedThere are quite a few functions that can be interesting, but I use mine to check distance travelled.
