Thanks Tim for posting the video.

I hunted there with Nigel Thiesen in 2010. I took 2 great buffs but we saw no other game besides a few baboons and an occasional warthog. I am amazed at how much the game has come back.

I took one very deep curl buff and a typical flat horned Nile.

Also, Mike Jines' rifle looks real interesting. Custom Mauser? What caliber was he shooting?

I know Mike will jump on at some point and give the full details on his rifle but thought I would fill in some gaps. I used his rifle to shoot all three of my buff as a last minute mistake in my Ugandan gun paperwork meant I was traveling without the rifle I prepared to take on this trip. Thanks to Mike, Tom and Christian I was able to hunt without a hitch so a big "thank you" to all three of those gentlemen for the use of their rifles at some point in the safari!

Mike's rifle is a custom Mauser in .404 Jeff and was built by Duane Wiebe. It is a thing of beauty, no doubt, and Mike added all the right touches to the rifle to make it truly safari-worthy! I coveted that rifle... except for the short to me LOP, it is exactly how I would build a .404.

Also, like Tim, my last buffalo will be on Part 2 so you can expect a couple of more buffalo and then some unique plainsgame taken in Aswa Lolim and the Kafu River Basin. Like everyone else I am eagerly awaiting the final installment.

This is part one that was put together by Safari Classics (some of it has been running on Hornady's Dark and Dangerous). In Part 1 we are in Karamojo primarily hunting buffalo, and there are 12 bulls taken here. Part two will be out in coming weeks. Let us know what you think.

And as I know there will be some comments, into the hunt, I had a problem with some bullet tumbling, and you will see the results. Hope you enjoy...

I have not had time yet to watch this, but I am sure looking forward to it.

I have to ask if you saw any or many elephant in this area, with such a famous and historical name?

Mike,
We saw and filmed two nice older bulls who were on their own and a couple of groups of cows, calves and young bulls. I am going to guestimate somewhere around fifty total but some of the ellies we may have seen twice. Mike or Tim, your thoughts?

I may be jumping ahead but I’m guessing you saw more/bigger elephant bulls in Murchison Falls NP?

Yep there were a couple of serious elephant bulls in the swamps to the left of the entrance to the MFNP. I just recall cows and smaller bulls in the park itself...

Really enjoyed the video. I'm amazed at the amount of buffalo filmed throughout the episode and how relaxed many of them were. Was all the footage from the hunting area or some footage taken in the park and added for content? If the former, then that ought to be one of the very top buffalo hunting areas in Africa today, price not withstanding tu2

Kidepo National Park supposedly has the largest single herd of buff in Africa.

When I hunted Karamoja north in 2010 with Nigel Theisen...I was amazed at the amount of buffalo. At that time...they had rarely been hunted and were very relaxed.

Except for the two old bulls filmed and discussed just after we landed, all the other buffalo were in the concession. In 26 safaris across Africa, I've never seen anything quite like it!

I think the number of buffalo and their demeanor are a credit to Christian Weth and Uganda Wildlife Safaris. They focus on leaving the herds and herd bulls alone and try to concentrate on smaller dugga boy groups so the herds do not feel pressured. Part of it is also topography. The concession includes some beautiful long vlei lines that have water and great graze for the herds.

In terms of elephant, I do not recall seeing any "oh wow" bulls. Probably nothing over 50 pounds. That said, we were not close to the elephant and consequently were not in a position to assess body size very well and body size can certainly impact the perception of tusk size at a distance.

As Russell said, it really is an amazing place.

Mike, Yes it looks like a wonderful place. The buffalo herds sure behave like they have not been pounded on too hard. Very "natural" herds.
In this covid 19 isolation, I consider that watching your buffalo hunting video is my morning prayers.
Also, I noticed that you are very good with your rifle. Good job! Brian

Great video! Buffalo on steroids in numbers and with mannerisms I could not have imagined based on my limited experience. Thanks for sharing!

Only problem is I started it at 10PM and stayed with it to the end. Morning still started with the 5AM dog walk, then some review of parts of the video, so I think it’s about time for an un-programmed nap…

Good hunting,

From what I have found Kidepo has herds as large as 4000 with a total population of 13,000. Most all buffalo are concentrated along the Narus River valley.

Incredible is not enough to express my wonder.

Great experience just watching the video. The old old animals are not going to be ever seen again in such numbers. I loved the old elephant too. really old with thick trunk base.
