If it was on a concession, fenced and secure, let him grow up. Fair chase, that buff is gonna have a hole (or multiples) in it.

Actually, the bull appears quite mature and that boss may not be near as soft as first impressions indicate.

Here's one that one of my PHs in Zimbabwe sent me last week that he had spotted from the truck and taken a picture of. He is estimated to be well over 50". This is one cranker of a bull, but, he is soft and still needs 2 or 3 years to really get hard. Wouldn't you all agree? Big Grin

UEG,

I have to agree with you but the image of that amazing bull would haunt me for a lifetime if I had seen that bull while hunting.

Must say that a hard boss is essential for a trophy buff.

Shot a nice buff in Matetsi some years ago, but the boss was just too soft. Looked at it and looked at it, and imagined it mounted. Decided not to mount it, but to cut the horns off and turn them into drinking horns. Designed a cradle to set the horns in. They hold 16 oz of beer and sit on the left or right forearm ready to drink.

Regards

Actually, I don't think he is very young.

And having shot a few buffalo, some tend to have a soft opening between the bosses, no matter how old they are.

It might be due to genetics.

I have seen bulls that have enormous bosses, covering all their head. Looks like a big hat.

I have also seen others which have very thin bosses - almost like a cow's.

My two cents worth. this hard soft topic comes up all the time and it's total BS.. as Saeed said some bulls never close up( get hard) completely OLD is OLD end of story. I killed one in Uganda that was older than Shakari's wet dreams. and KNOW he was not quote unquote hard enough for some on this forum.HE was only older than dirt..his teeth worn of to numbs and both horns broke off. it was estimated he was so close to the end of his life cycle that a strong fart would have killed him.

I'm no expert but I'd venture a guess that the bull UEG posted is noteably younger than the one Jerry posted evidenced by the dark triangle of hair between his bosses, the smooth appearance of his horns and the very sharp points of his horns above the boss indicating minimum wear. JMO

That is a prime breeding bull, most probably in his 8 th year if in southern Africa or in his 7 th if in east Africa. His horn tips have dropped to below boss level so he can successfully fight (head butt) for breeding favors, but the tips are still sharp. His boss is hard enough in the center for fighting, but it is not yet fully formed along its lowest edge. This area is still hairy and it is a good indicator of his youthful age. To shoot this magnificent bull at this stage of his life would in my opinion be criminal. I say this because he still has a good few years of breeding in him - to pass his impressive genes on. The reason why the trophy quality in many of the better buffalo hunting areas is dropping is because'too young' bulls like this are being shot before they have bred successfully. It is time for all of us to show a little maturity here, forget about the inches and look towards the future. By the time this bull has done breeding, his horn tips will be worn down, but his boss will be bigger and completely solid. He will still be a magnificent bull and a spectacular trophy even though he'll score less. He will look old and rugged, with tatty ears and white hairless patches on his face. Rest assured he'll also be a lot smarter and more difficult to hunt. As he now looks, he's 'baby faced', with the look of youth still very evident. We all want our kids and grandkids to see buff like this decades from now, and they will not is such bulls keep getting shot.

The Zimbabwe buffalo UEG posted is a lot younger. Most probably in his 6 th year. Notice his completely soft boss and horn tips still well above boss level. They will drop over the next couple of years while his boss starts to harden up. This will enable him to be ready to challenge for breeding favors sometime in his 8 th year. No doubt a magnificent, close to 50" young bull with lots of potential - I just hope he gets to become a dagga boy one day.

If I were the hunter on safari, both of those bulls would be deader than dirt, right there, right now. Those are phenomenal bulls, and anyone who is finding them to be soft is really looking hard. I do agree that they're both fairly young in all likelihood, but I'm shooting them as quickly as I can.

You know, there are times when you simply don't need your PH to tell you to shoot, and these would be that kind of time.

Sorry to be late to the party........ I couldn't get away from ogling all the dusky maidens that were walking past the coffee shop but hey, it's tough being retired. rotflmo

Hooker's buff truly was well past his sell by date & if he hadn't whacked it quick, it would probably have fallen over from old age anyway....... and he's dead right. Some armchair quarterbacks did bleat a tad but as I see it, he had the buff he'd dreamed of for years & he has every right to be as proud as punch about it.

As for the one in the original pic........ I'd leave it to the individual client to decide but reckon the vast majority of clients would say hell yes.

I have something to add:

Normaly, this is the reason why you have an offical "Game Scout" at hunts in Tansania, etc.
(I mean -sorry I dream for an real and educated man- not one of this typicall guy..., who wants to have cash and then he sees in an other direction...)

This man must say "NO, YOU CANT SHOOT HIM" in sutch situations.

As the doc explains, to shoot this great buffalo, before he had given his gens to many cows as possible is an true crime agains the nature.

Best wishes.

Hunter

Better not shoot it.

I would leave it to someone like Arnold Payne to capture and put it a boma.

Then sell it to some so called "trophy hunter" for $100,000! rotflmo

I would prefer to shoot an old bull with his horns all worn down.

I hope you won't mind my correcting you on that.

The game scout is there as an observer to make sure no game laws are broken not to advise on trophy quality of legal animals. That is the PHs job.

He might say you can't shoot a particular animal because it's female for example....... but he might instead simply let you go ahead & then report it to his boss but he wouldn't stop you shooting a bull such as the one shown in the first picture.

I'm a bit out of touch with the current (TZ) act but IIRC it says no females with dependent young rather than no females so even that might be open to a degree of interpretation.

That's funny because when I was in Tanzania the game scout offered to scare a nice buff from the park to the hunting concession for $200. If it was a 50 incher I might have thought twice. Wink

I'll add that if that bull is in RSA or other fenced area, he's worth an awful lot more money than just the trophy fee....... even an awful lot more than an Arnold Payne style trophy fee.
