What is a representative animal for Nyala and Wateerbuck? We will be hunting in the Eastern Cape area. I am just curious as to what size animal is a realistic goal.

I have only hunted them in Zimbabwe where 30" is a great trophy for both. I would have thought you could shoot a 30" Nyala in the Eastern Cape but im not sure about Waterbuck.

Not many ranches will have 30 inch Nyala or Waterbuck. With few exceptions, 30 inches on either is the mecca of trophyland. Natal is the best area to take above average Nyala. Zululand is their home. Finding a 30" Waterbuck, well, they are where you find them, and they hide well. 10-4 on what Donner said. Best of luck on your hunt, David

We would consider 28" Nyala as OK, 30" as very good and 30" Waterbuck as OK and 32" as very good. But then we have had larger on both. Altough normally very OK elsewhere, a 28" Waterbuck trophy brought back to camp would have a PH being heckled for weeks by his collegues.

But then, we do live in Waterbuck heaven in Coutada 10, Zambezi delta ... there are no better and more good Waterbuck bulls anywhere on earth. NS ...

Hawkeye,

for eastern cape I would but a 27 nyala on the very good side. Same with a waterbuck. But, truly, it will be the experience. It will be yours and no one will have one just like it. Set goals certainly but don't spit in Africa's eye.

The big kahuna waterbuck is there. I've seen it. In fact, there are many. It may a bit wet - ie lots of water around - to catch the makula nyala now as they are distributed everywhere. It is always a pity you guys have a limited window of opportunity to do this thing!

Then again, I may be wrong! It is a wild and unpredictable area and you never know ... You just never know ..

The best one of each species that you can find and get a decent shot at.

I've been lucky enough to take lots of Top Ten animals, but I don't remember ever worrying about trophy size -- I just tell the PH that I'd like to do as well as possible, given the current circumstances, and count on him to help me find the best I can do that time out.

I couldn't be happier with the results.

When you get bored with life, start hunting dangerous game with a handgun.
