Zebra Driving???

So... it was my wife's Birthday a week or so ago and I was trying to find something special to give her... which - believe me - is not easy given the fact that she is terribly spoiled and pretty much has everything that any woman desires (me???) LOL

She's very fond of horses and a couple of years ago she went cattle driving on horseback in Canada - something she hasn't stopped talking about and bugging me to go back ever since... Well, I had no intention of taking her to Canada as it is freezing there at the moment AND I'm way too busy fixing up the ranch for the upcoming season...

So I decided to take her "zebra driving"... Whilst not as strenuous as cattle driving, "zebra driving" can be quite challenging...

Nice thing is that you never know what to expect in the African bushveld... you might even end up driving giraffe?

Or Rhino???

We had an awesome time and this got me thinking about hunting from horseback - like the pioneers did... I know some operators offer these kind of hunting safaris but is there anyone out there who'd be interested in something like this?

No finer way to move around the bush (or the outback) than on horseback! It would be adventure par excellence if you could hunt with horses in Africa!

Every country seems to have its own horse culture - saddles are different, riding styles etc etc. I have been on horseback in different parts of the World, but never in Southern Africa. It would be interesting to experience the rich horse traditions of a country like South Africa. There is a lot of history associated with SA and horses - e.g. the Boer commandos.

I think that would be quite enjoyable to go about a safari on horseback. I used to foxhunt for many years via horseback behind hounds, fantastic experience. The horses know the game too.

Great pict's Chris. While I am not looking to hunt on horseback, being able to ride close to the game would be a lot of fun on that family-safari. Email sent... Bill

Wow, didn't expect such a response! Thanks everyone for posting and sending me me emails / PM's.

I'm currently working on some pricing issues and as soon as all of that has been resolved I will respond in detail.

Just to clarify - we won't shoot from horseback but horses would be used for scouting and tracking. The final stalk will still be on foot.

I should also mention that - although we will cater for hunters with a variety of riding skills (the horses are superbly trained and there are several available) I would suggest that whoever considers this must be reasonably riding fit. Sitting on horseback for 6 hours a day is not exactly the same as sitting on a hunting car...

But that it is a rewarding experience is no question. Especially for me - at least my wife has dropped her ideas of another cattle drive in Canada...

That sounds like a sensible precaution! Eeker

IMHO, it would be ideal if you had the option of switching back to the car, should the situation demand it. E.g. as much as I savour riding, I don't get to ride in my daily life. Once on horseback, I thoroughly enjoy the adventure, but it also beats me up pretty well. I could well imagine I'd be ready for a break from the horses after 3 or 4 days.
