RSA rifle permit question

One of my first posts here, so apologies if this is not the best place to ask this question. I'm headed to Zim 25 Aug with my father. We will overnight in RSA before our flight to Bulawayo the next day so are preparing to send all the paperwork for the RSA SAPS rifle permits through riflepermits.com. My question lies in the fact that my father is having problems with one of his rifles that he really would like to take with him, but he's not sure he can get the problem fixed. If he can get it fixed, it is one of his favorite rifles and he surely would take it. So, the question is, if he was to list 3 rifles on his 4457 form as well as on the RSA rifle permit (including the problem rifle, its replacement, and a heavy rifle), but only arrive in RSA with two rifles, will that cause major problems? Because of the time it takes to get the rifle permits pre-approved, we'd like to get everything in place now, rather than waiting to see if his rifle can be satisfactorily repaired. Thanks for your help.

Hi Test, most "meet and greet" services want a minimum of 30 days to process your app. That gives you breathing room. I'd say wait until the first of July to decide. That will give riflepermits plenty of time. And, you might face a problem taking 3 rifles. They may or may not cut you slack. Generally, it is 2 rifles and 1 shotgun max. No person shall take more than one rifle of the same caliber, as in 2 30-06s. You should email riflepermits and ask any gun questions as they keep up with current laws. I think your taking the safe route: get your SAPS permit if your overnighting in Jo'burg (and you will). Flight 208 from the US arrives around 2:35pm but the flights to Zim leave around 9:30am each morning. I would stay at Afton House and I believe they operate riflepermits as well. Have a great hunt and good luck with the rifle. LDK

LDK,

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't aware that they had a 2 rifle, 1 shotgun restriction, although it was never our intention to take more than two rifles each in any case. You're dead-on about the flight times we'll be encountering. We do have reservations at Afton House, which is why we're using riflepermits. I'm really looking forward to this hunt, but the paperwork, preparation is a little daunting at times.

Yes it is. Try doing it everyday. They say you have to love something for it not to be work. I'm lucky in that respect. I found at an early age I wasn't cut out to work for someone else, so I do what I love. Stay in touch with your PH. He may not be able to answer quickly, but he will inform and answer your questions. Usually, the meet and greet service will send you current restrictions and guidelines on your gun importation. If I can help just email or call me. Good hunting, David
