Today I received a email from the safari company and PH from my 2 week (jun 1- Jun 16, 2008) portion of my planned 2 country Africa trip. PH states due to instability and property invasions since the elections in Zim, they feel its unsafe and recommend cancelling my hunt. I agree and so now am looking at salvaging whats left. I have a week scheduled in NAmibia for PG, Ive emailed Nam PH asking about extension and extra days and will have to re look at airlines flights and such and see if I can go direct to Windhoek vice thru SA. Don't know how that part will work out yet. Looking at possibility of another Nam safari company if extension or extra days won't work out, so looking for any ideas from the folks here, especially those who book hunts. Funds NOT unlimited and don't know yet what current flight and hotel cancellations might cost. Might have to try later in 2008, or cancel all for 2008 and look at 2009 instead. thoughts, ideas etc appreciated. PM if you rather than discuss in open forum here. thanks, Willi

Who were you booked with in Zim if you do not mind me asking? Reason I ask is that the reaction of cancelling the hunt seems at odds with all the other information coming out of Zim -- particularly a hunt six weeks from now. Mike

Cancellation is bad. Very bad. Postponement is only slightly less bad. But there are so many considerations! I would like to offer a very good value for money alternative, but have too little information to make a meaningfull offer now. Most important is questions relates to where and what are you hunting in Namibia? Which plains game have you not hunted? Many more questions that beg an answer before I can make an offer! Will send PM. In good hunting. Sorry to hear about your cancellation as it doesn't parallel to what the other operators are saying. Best of luck to you on the transition and there are several guys here who can help...and they are already responding with more to come. _______________________________

surprising that they have cancelled your hunt so far in advance! things are in the balance but unless total mayhem breaks out it should all be fine by June. I would double check with the outfitter as to exactly why they want to cancel?

Scott450 I agree. The whole thing sounds goofy as all 3 of our operators in Zim are very busy and have been since March. At this point I see no problem for hunters nor is there any indication that there will be from the people on the ground. Mark MARK H. Ive answered all the pm's I have so far on this. My hunt is/was booked with Acacia Safaris, they are returning my full deposit over this cancellation. My Namibia outfitter has some extra days I can stay for and get a few other PG and even maybe a chance at a leopard, tho I think sable will be out of the mix due to the really, really high trophy fee in most tho not all other countries. Still have to talk with airlines about options for date changes and seats available. I have read the other stuff about Zim here, and others saying so far things (hunting) is still a go, BUT I can only go by what MY PH and company tell me in regards to the properties THEY hunt. They have experienced some "invasions" on their properties, and while I don't know the deatails of that, I believe when the PH speak of client safety and hunt quality I need to listen to that. As I sort thru this, I post here and continue to answer PM's. Willi

Willi, Pls find out what properties they hunt[ed] on. Where is Acacia Safaris based out of, Zimbabwe, South Africa or ?

The only Acacia Safaris I could find in a search was for a group that does trekking in Uganda, Kenya, TZ, etc. but nothing about Zim. Must not be the right company. I'm guessing they are not Zim based. _______________________________

They are Zim based and the one fellow I know that Willi mentioned in answer to my inquiry is first rate and above board. If Willi wishes to provide more detail, I'll leave that to him. JPK Free 500grains

Bill C and Yukon D Their website is http://www.acacia-safaris.com and the properties I was scheduled to hunt on are called Portwe and Chilton. As far as I know they are Zim based and the one PH (probably the one referred to by JPK) worked for a number years as a videographer for some other safari companies. I also think Ann from Aspen Hill represented them at one time, tho that would need to be confirmed with her.

Thanks for the info. Shaun used to work with Buzz. I think he did most of the videography on Buzz's first video. Is that right? Some of those package prices are really good...15k for a trophy ele package...daily rates are good. _______________________________

Shaun cancelled a hunter I had booked for him in the past and said the same thing... property seizure. Then a few months later an English chap showed up on this site promoting hunts for Shaun like there was no tomorrow. I thought something wasn't quite right with that. It also seemed to me there was some issue with Shaun's licensing which in the end, appeared like the real problem. Another issue he had never mentioned to me. I have not heard from him since he cancelled the hunt on my client. ~Ann

What a disappointment for you! I, too, was to go to Zim this year (for elephant) but my husband and I have made our own decision to cancel. I've been twice to Namibia and once to the eastern cape of South Africa, but never to Zimbabwe. My husband has hunted twice in Zimbabwe and the photographic evidence he returned with is of a paradise! I am so disappointed but I guess disappointment is probably easier to handle than erupting social and political unrest. I'd imagine your safari company knows its current status better than anyone and, were I in your position, I'd follow their recommendation. The happy news is this: If you get to go to Africa at all, then you're a winner! What a wonderful, magical part of the world.

He quotes our very own Will on his web page, but it doesn't sound like he actually hunted with him. "Shaun is one of the good guys and I would have no hesitation in hunting with him." An update for those interested. I've been in email contact with my Namibia outfitter/PH and I can extend my hunt there by 7/8 days which Ive agreed to do and still get a chance at doing a baited leopard hunt, plus pick up a couple of the other plains game from my cancelled Zim hunt. I'v also got a couple of feelers out for a week of hunting in South Africa after Namibia and there I'll now look at a Nyala and bushbuck primarily. By doing this, it looks like I can keep my current overseas flight schedule and just have to change my SAA airlines flight to make this mesh. So while its not gonna be what Ive been planning for the last 1.5 years, at least I'm still going and probably will do fine and not have to worry about the Zim situation. Willi

One of the potential problems with hunting Zim with SA PHs is not being able to export your trophies. The problem is related to most of the monies being taken (understandably) back to SA when there is an existing edict requiring the use of ZIM banks for a substantial amount of the transaction. One of my favorite outfitters is SA based and We have hunted together in other countries but I think it best to hunt Zim with a Zim guy. JMO.

Shaun Buffee is a Zimbabwean national who resides in South Africa. I believe he completed his Zim PH licence in 2006 from what I was told. Anyway he was scheduled to finish it in 2006. My contact with him was I directly hired him as a cameraman to take video film on my elephant hint in 2006.

Okay I think Ive finally gotten this all sorted out. Airline changes done, which was really only a change to my return date from Windoek back to Joberg and cancellation of my Zim flight ( although I'm being told that I really can't cancel that without incurring more change fees, and who knows what fine print on my trip insurance will keep me from getting $$$ back there). Will end up staying 8 extra days in Namibia with my previous booke outfitter, good think he had the extra days, plus I can also try for the leopard in Nam now, tho not sure what the success percentage will be compared to what I would have had in Zim. Doing a week of huting in South Africa now too and will be after Nyala, which was NOT on my original list and then also a Limpopo bushbuck and then a mountian reedbuck. So all was not lost on this Zim cancellation. Now just have to wait until departure day which is 21 May 2008. Willi
