I noted an article today in the latest Sports Afield by Ron Spomer regarding the TSA'S latest restrictions on carrying lithium batteries when flying. Since most of our electronics are powered by the same, he gives us his interpretation as to how much we can take. However, as such relates to a SureFire flashlight, can anyone give me a simpler explanation, after reading the article, as to how many spares we can actually take with us when flying?

I have not read the article either and would be most interested in TSA's outlook on this. I plan on taking a minumum of 36, 123 Surfire batteries for my 2 Surfire flashlights next month on my trip to Namibia. I leave the unused ones with my PH as I gave him a Surefire last year. Mine will be scattered throughout, some in the carry on, some in with the locked ammo box in my checked bag, and a few more in the Tuff Pak.

Not sure if it helps or not, but we had a discussion about it a while back.

I didn't have any problem carrying my lithium batteries in my carry-on luggage. One battery was directly attached to the camcorder and 2 others were encased in separate ziploc bags. This was as of two days ago.

You can carry all the spare CR123's as you want in your carry on luggage. Take a look at page 2 of this PDF.

Thanks John. That appears to be the definitive answer. Sorry I didn't see the post back in December that was also referenced above. Both have been helpful. I think that I'll follow Shakari's advice and get the lithium battery holder that SureFire advertises. I don't need to take a whole case of them with my when I travel, and I need to carry a spare bulb for my A-2 Aviator anyway.

UEG/JH - Thanks guys for all the help, I didn't see the previous post either. So I guess I will move all the CR123's to the carryon in their original boxes, wrap some plastic around them and go for it. I also have one of the Surefire Spares carriers, so it will go along as well. I'll be using my PH's video cam so won't need batts for it. Thanks
