You're gonna get lots of different answers to this one! Of the areas we hunt in, the best places I know of for big waterbuck are Tuli Block Botswana & Selous Reserve Tanzania.... you'll find a list of other species that are available in the areas we hunt by clicking here:- http://www.kuduland.com/african_hunting_destinations.htm Then click on the individual country...

In Zimbabwe, I'd recommend Humani in the Save Conservancy, Roger Whittal has some great waterbuck along the river. South Africa's Limpopo region also produces some whoppers. Try Numzaan Safaris and/or Brad Rolston who posts here. I'm sure there are others who have large properties to hunt where fair chase is not a problem. Kwan who posts here may have some areas also. I've hunted with all of these folks and can recommend them. Try Saaiman Safaris at shsafari@mweb.co.za in Mozambique They opened up an area previously unhunted south of the Zambezi river and close to the Indian ocean. I saw acres of water buck with four taken during their time there all over 31 " including my 32.5 incher. Jim

We work with Barry Duckworth on the Save Conservancy in Zimbabwe and as bwanarm said there are excellent waterbuck there. We also work with Garry Kelly in RSA and he has access to some properties in the Northern Province that can produce some very big waterbuck. I'm actually hunting up there with him this year and a big waterbuck is on the menu. Mark MARK H. I collected a 30-incher with Johan Schoonbee Safaris with my bow. We saw 13 bulls at the waterhole that evening! I'd highly recommend Schoonbee Safaris to anyone ... top notch. www.johanschoonbeesafaris.com BTW Waterbuck are probably the most underrated game in Africa ... those things make fabulous trophies. Jeez, when I said, "You're gonna get lots of different answers to this one!" - I wasn't kidding..... I forgot to say in my previous post, FWIW, I've never taken a waterbuck in Tuli Block Botswana that was less than 30 inches.

Speaking of Waterbucks, I've had ample opportunity to take them, but have always balked. The 1500 dollar trophy fee just seems all out of proportion to the rather bland looks (in my view only folks) when a kudu costs about half. jorge USN (ret) DRSS Verney-Carron 450NE Cogswell & Harrison 375 Fl NE Sabatti Big Five 375 FL Magnum NE DSC Life Member NRA Life Member

Jorge, With regards to waterbuck, Ruark said "There's no more ruggedly handsome animal in Africa." I look at mine every day and have to agree. DPhiliips, I know waterbucks and that is one doozy! I have to agree. Maybe not one of the glamour animals but certainly a nice trophy. They always look like they have an attitude to me. If you have ever seen one looking at you in the bush you know what I mean. Happiness is a warm gun

Jorge, I look at mine everyday as I leave the house. He is 30 inches but his tips are worn down. He gets this position because not only is he impressive but I had to chase after him through the thorns after making a less than optimal shot. I was bloodied but happy when I caught up to him and took him. It was also my first animal taken in Africa so I worked out a bad case of nerves in the process. I will always remember this one. Jorge, I'd go to Africa just for the sable ... taking a waterbuck on the same trip would be cool as grits ... hope that happens for you! In "Out of Africa" there's a big waterbuck hanging in the gentlemen's club ... I always pause it there for a look. Here's a 29 1/2" East African Defassa Waterbuck taken in the hills above the Gojeb River in Ethiopia in 1985. This is back when mustaches were black instead of white. I shot a Lion the next day. BTW, the Waterbuck is still #46 in the SCI Bible. Rich Elliott Rich Elliott Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris

My waterbuck is my favorite trophy. It's no record book maker (at least I don't think it is) as it is only 29 and a half inches, taken in the Limpopo province in October 2005, which is nice and mature for the common waterbuck. That's Jaco Human on the right. The fit little 60 year old in the middle is Elias. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Jorge, where do you get Kudu for $750? ****************************************************************** R. Alf, The one taken on your ranch really has a lot of contrasting colors on his face. Many Defassa's are like that. Of course, they don't have that circle on thier ass. That one must have made a beautiful mount. Rich Elliott Rich Elliott Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris

Here's my little guy from my very first safari. Though not real long in the horn (28") he has some nice mass. I'd hunt another one someday or go for a different species like the Defassa. ~Ann
