As I know there are several booking agents that post on this section, I have a question for you. I had booked a hunting trip thru a booking agent for this June. This was not an African Safari but a trip to South America. I had paid the entire fee to the agent for the trip as it was due 60 days prior to departure. Two days prior to departure a medical emergency occured which required me to have surgery. The agent was contacted immediately and told about the accident. As soon as I got home from surgery I contacted the agent and he told me that he had already sent the money to the outfitter and that he was unable to do anything for me as he had no say in the matter anymore. I was not asking for a return of my money but was trying to see about rescheduling a time for a future hunt. My question is, am I being unrealistic to think that the agent should at least try and talk to the outfitter about the situation before telling me that he has no say in the situation and cannot do anything for me. I had hunted with these people for the past five years. Your comments are appreciated. Jim

Hi Jim, Your agent should do anything within his power to reschedule your hunt. If they (agent) are legit, and your Outfitter the same, I see no reason why you couldn't reschedule your hunt. Unless you signed a contract stating that no refunds with no rescheduling was allowed, there should be no excuse for not helping you. The agent, if unable to work out something for you should at the very least offer to refund his commission. Please keep us posted. While it might be nice if the agent and the outfitter accommodated the client, they have no obligation to do so, particularly where the outfitter cannot mitigate his loss by rescheduling as seems to be the case here. This is one of the reasons that the client should assess his vulnerability to risk and take out trip cancellation insurance if he is "over exposed." I know that this isn't a warm fuzzy response, but the outfitter and the agent are in a business. While the agent might remit some of his fee, it is relatively low relative to the cost of the trip. Agreed with Kudude. While the agent could try to help, he may not be able to. The hunt was booked and the day arrived but no client came. They are still out money for an empty slot that they did not have time to plan for. I'm sure that stinks for you but it does for them too. That's why they have trip insurance. You couldn't help it but why should they pay for it too? Also, consider that this happened to you once but it can happen to them multiple times over a season. Being that you are a longtime repeat customer, I would deal directly with the operators since the agent said he could not help. Perhaps they will offset the next hunt or make an arrangement with you. Many would but they are not obligated to do so. _______________________________

in my experience, most any reputable outfitter will reschedule. if he's full it may be for a year or 2 down the line, but that is acceptable

I think most outfitters will do everything to accommodate a hunter in such a situation and the agent should be able to arrange that for you. ~Ann

I think that's why trip insurance is always a good idea. DB Bill aka Bill George
