I'm filling out CITES paperwork for USF&W for the first time and want to get this right. Got a couple questions......

Question #4 at the top of page 3.......

Name of overseas person shipping the trophy to you........

Would that be........

My PH/Outfitter or the taxidermy place doing the dip & pack? They are not one in the same for this trip.

Question #5 page three.......

the question is about USF&W making a decision on the activity benefiting the wild population of the species being hunted. They ask any information supporting this be included with the application.

Have any of you actually sent anything before and if so what?

Question #8 page 3

Have you obtained all foreign government approval to conduct the activity planned?

The three answer choices are Yes (provide copy of approval), Have applied, and Not required.

Since the Leopard is available on quota do I answer yes and provide a copy of the signed off quota from the PH, or do I answer "not required".

The rest of the form seems simple enough.

Thanks for the help....

Cheers
Jim

I have filled out 2 CITES Import Permit Applications for Leopard and both have been issued with no problems, and I received the Leopards into the US without event. One in 2010 and the other in 2011. Please be aware that I had already taken the cat and filled out the paperwork once arriving back home but doing it the way you are, prior to the trip, is probably more desirable. These are the answers I gave to your questions:

Name of person sending the Leopard. The first time I applied, the cat had been shipped to Freight Consultants so I named them. The second cat, I put down the outfitter as the cat had not been shipped to the expediter yet. Both seemed to work just fine.

Question 5, page 3 - I did not send any supporting documentation

Question 8, page 3 - I answered Yes and did not provide any additional information.

You can call the USFWS as well and speak to them about it. I'm not guaranteeing my answers are correct. Just giving you my experience to date.

Good luck on your cat!

If I remeber correctly, the forms have a 12 month life. I would not apply too far in advance of your hunt. When I got my leopard the government of Zimbabwe waited till season end to handle the paperwork for the season take of leopards. I believe you can get an extension but I got mine with about 10 days to spare. Some recent leopard hunters may advise if the rules are changed. I would ask the Zimbabwe PHs if the practice of approval only at season end applies.

Jim,

Talk to your Safari Company, and they can tell you what to put down.

With both of the ones I did, they told me to put them down as the shipper as the dip and pack form is a contractor, not the person doing the shipment.

As to the question #5, I did not put anything down there, as that is what I was instructed to do.

With regards to the Foreign Government approval, I put have applied, as the company did not get the licenses until shortly before I arrived ( they are unlikely to pay money until the last minute...) but you should ask them what they want you to put down.

Make sure once you get your leopard box 11a has the date the cat is exported and not the date shot or you will have to send it back

Thanks for the replies.

Mike Borman of Bangwuelu Taxidermy filled me in on some details and rather quickly. He handles a load of shipments from Zambia and will be dealing with mine as well.

Thanks again,

Cheers
Jim
