I've had the opportunity to take 15 whitetail deer sized animals (8 whitetails, 3 impala, 2 Red Lechewe, and 2 tsessebe) with 5 different calibers: 300 Rem SAUM 180gr, 300 WM unknown bullet, 30-06 180gr TBBC, 7X57 140gr core Lockt, and 375 H&H 300gr TBBC. All, with the possible exception of the 300 WM (PH's gun), were factory loads All worked well. Factoring in distance traveled after the shot, damage done to the trophy (big exit holes from 300 RSAUM and WM), recoil, etc; this highly unscientific survey leads me to say: "the 7X57 is the best choice for whitetail Deer sized game". They are all the same. They all do basically the same thing. Because we are enthusiasts and we are bored at work, we like to argue about how many spirits can dance on the head of a pin. Everything from a .22-250 to a .460 Weatherby will terminate a whitetail. We argue because we are bored. analog_peninsula ----------------------- It takes character to withstand the rigors of indolence.

They are all the same only in they all will kill a whitetail/impala sized animal well. They are different however. The 300 magnums cause much more tissue damage. They have differing amounts of recoil. They feel different. In the end each of us has more or less confidence in one or the other. If we simply use a bench mark of which will effectively terminate any animal, than we would all have a 375 H&H and only a 375 H&H. After all it will kill anything, so why bother with any other caliber? TerryR

Thanks Terry. Now I have to go out and get a 7x57. It never ends! (at least I hope it never does!!!) Brian "If you can't go all out, don't go..."

Interesting Terry. I note that the CoreLokt is hardly a premium bullet! peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong;

Hmm!!! I will opt for .308 Winchester with 165 gr. bullets. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. Just my 2 cents on the subject and nothing more: I'll keep my .280 although I own a .300RUM. If I want to avoid massive tissue damage I would use a Barnes bullet, 180 grain and do my best to pick a broadside shot avoiding the shoulders. Remington Corelokt's may not be a premium bullet but they do a premium job on Whitetails; big or small IMHO. Terry, Thanks for opening up this this can of worms! Yeppers, I used to think the 7x57mm was the perfect whitetailed deer cartridge, then I latched onto the 6.5x54mm, 6.5x55mm, 6.5x57mm, .260 Remington, .257 Roberts, and most recently the .280 Remington. Gee, the ALL do the job, but I have to tip my hat to the 6.5mm family, as I have taken the most deer (14) with the 6.5mms. The .30-06 works every time, the .270 is overkill, .243 WCF works, and ye olde and hoary .38-55 WCF is a killer. It still boils down to shot placement and a reasonable bullet. LLS
